I'm nuts when it comes to Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki's work- all of them
Princess Mononoke, Laputa, Grave of the Fireflies, Tortorro, Whisper of the Heart etc
Don't you agree that the guy who created the music for these is THE BEST ? Joe Hisashi- listening to Mononoke's theme is just surreal-out of this world experience. The music is indeed great, and seeing all these films again recently on IFC and Cartoon Network ahas been great.

Re: Favorite Anime?
Once you start on favouites... Well as you say... anything Miyazaki.
At the moment I would put Howl on top since I adore Kimura and was taken by the way he used his voice. And the music.....
then Nausicaa
then Princess Mononoke
Then Spirited Away
Have Fireflies on the shelf waiting.
did not particularly enjoy Porco but the animation was splendid.

I just saw in episode of Hare+Guu at Comic Con. It was hilarious. I didn't buy any disks there. Just way to expensive, so I've purchased volumes 1-3 (used) from Amazon.

Peg have you seen Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart? Wonderful! It's not Miyazaki but it's my absolute favorite from that studio.
Grave of the Fireflies is a classic. Very powerful and depressing for me. Splendid, but a little too heavy for me to watch multiple times.Tragic what happened with both of those in real life, but I agree they are wonderful works.

In no order:
-Mai-HiME
-Tsukuyomi: Moon Phase
-Rozen Maiden
-Azumanga Daioh
-Full Metal Panic
Apparently, I seem to favor the more obscure and short-ranged series.
As of right now, I'm trying to get into "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumya".
Oh and I love the Kindaichi Case Files but as a manga. I feel that the anime version rather lacking in detail.

Currently watching and enjoying the Bleach series and Death Note...
Started watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumya and couldn't get in to it, but will give it another try. I keep hearing it's really great.
For the fans of Miyazaki: I attended the screening of Whisper of the Heart in Santa Monica a month or so ago. It was mentioned, during the Q&A, that he was currently working on a new film, but it was very hush, hush. I think the storyboards have been completed..
