500 Days Of Summer (2009)

Much better than you might expect it to be..
And Zooey Dechanel is .. well .. yeah.. ..
Nice ponytail too..

Trailer
http://www.techgiga.com/2009/07/500-days-of-summer-2009.html

'500 Days of Summer' is an offbeat romantic comedy intended primarily for those who may not otherwise like romantic comedies.
This is a smart, sweet, funny, and enjoyable film that radiates with warmth and authenticity, focusing on characters we can accept as real people.
It also does not go for a predictable, happy ending.
It understands that relationships do not always go as planned; they are often far more complicated than that.
Feelings are not always mutual; occasionally, they are reciprocated at all. To love and not be loved in return can be devastating.

Gigantic (2008)
Image
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1176251/

Cast:
Paul Dano ... Brian Weathersby
Zooey Deschanel ... Harriet 'Happy' Lolly
Edward Asner ... Mr. Weathersby
Jane Alexander ... Mrs. Weathersby
John Goodman ... Al Lolly

Mattress salesman Brian Weathersby (Dano) finds his plan to adopt a Chinese baby augmented by the arrival of a young woman, Happy (Deschanel),
who comes into his workplaces, falls asleep on one of the beds, and starts to affect his life upon waking up.

Meh... the Zooey factor isn't enough to overcome the predictable, pretentious crap factor.. 4/10

Eulogy (2004)
Image
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0349416/

Cast:
Hank Azaria ... Daniel Collins
Jesse Bradford ... Ryan Carmichael
Zooey Deschanel ... Kate Collins
Glenne Headly ... Samantha
Famke Janssen ... Judy Arnolds
Piper Laurie ... Charlotte Collins
Kelly Preston ... Lucy Collins
Ray Romano ... Skip Collins
Rip Torn ... Edmund Collins
Debra Winger ... Alice Collins

A spirited ensemble cast keeps things cooking in Eulogy, a black comedy about a gathering of the dysfunctional Collins family following the death of its prickly patriarch (Rip Torn). Zooey Deschanel plays granddaughter Kate, struggling to fulfill the old man's last wish that she write his eulogy. Meanwhile, her dad (Hank Azaria), a has-been actor, smokes pot in the dark and referees battles between his seamy brother Skip (Ray Romano), lesbian sister Lucy (Kelly Preston) and her lover Judy (Famke Janssen), caustic sibling Alice (Debra Winger), and suicidal mother Charlotte (Piper Laurie). Confused about her loyalties, poor Kate alternately runs to and from best friend Ryan (Jesse Bradford), who wants to become her lover, while Alice--super-critical of Lucy's sexuality--fails to keep secret her own fling with a nurse (Glenn Headly). Many funny moments, and Deschanel, Romano, and Preston are particularly watchable.

Very funny - Given the subject matter. And a great cast. 7/10

Two Cary Grant / Irene Dunne comedies on TCM ..

The Awful Truth (1937)
Image
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028597

Before their divorce becomes final, Jerry and Lucy Warriner (Cary Grant & Irene Dunne) both do their best to ruin each other's plans for remarriage, Jerry to haughty socialite Molly Lamont, she to oil-rich bumpkin Daniel Leeson. Among their strategies: Jerry's court-decreed visitation rights with Mr. Smith, their pet fox terrier, and Lucy's flamboyant impersonation of Jerry's brassy "sister" before his prospective bride's scandalized family.

----------------------------------------------------------

My Favorite Wife (1940)
Image
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029284/

Ellen Arden (Irene Dunne) arrives 7 years after being given up for dead in a shipwreck, only to find her husband Nick (Cary Grant) has just remarried to Bianca (Gail Patrick).
The overjoyed Nick awkwardly tries to break the news gently to Bianca. But before he can do that, an unpleasant surprise--news that Ellen has spent the 7 years on a deserted island with fellow-survivor Burkett (Randolph Scott). Nick's jealousy tries to find out the truth.
Hilarious confusion reigns before Nick chooses his favorite wife.

St.Trinian's (2007)

Image
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0964587/

Pretty lame.. Can't hold a candle to the old original black & white St.Trinian's film series..

The Belles of St. Trinian's (1954)
Blue Murder at St. Trinian's (1957)

etc..

Some things should just be left well alone.. emoticon

Very interesting intro...haven't seen it but it sounds like they screwed up a good premise. Bummer. I like alternate history stories. A good series you may enjoy reading is Eric Flint's (and other authors as well) series starting with a book called "1632" and it is so popular and well done the website gets many many hits.

Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven (1975) aka Tabor ukhodit v nebo

Image

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073781/

Russian with English softsubs..

This colourful, music-filled and sensual melodrama based on early stories by Maxim Gorky tells the fatal love story between the beautiful and rebellious girl Rada and the handsome horse thief Zobar.
The story is set in early 20th century Bessarabia, now part of Moldova, then belonging to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Was recommended to me by a Russian friend as a primer on mainstream, commercially made Soviet film of the 1970's.. (of which not a whole lot is still available).
It's really just a Romeo & Juliet type plot.. Only with Gypsies and horse thieves and Cossacks and the like..
The description is accurate though.. it is very colourful, fast paced and the female lead is indeed quite sensual..
Even whilst smoking a pipe.. emoticon
