Carlos Castaneda (1925 – 1998) published twelve books between 1968 and 1998. The first two, "The Teachings of Don Juan: a Yaqui Way of Knowledge" and "A Separate Reality," discuss Castaneda's meeting don Juan Matus and his apprenticeship involving the use of datura and peyote. The subsequent books downplay the importance of ingestions of such "power plants."

The third and fourth books, "Journey to Ixtlan"" and "Tales of Power" outline the other practices learned from don Juan Matus and don Genaro Flores during Castaneda's apprenticeship. "The Second Ring of Power" goes on to describe events occurring after the departure of Castaneda's teachers. "The Eagle's Gift" is a transitional book consisting partly of a continuation of the previous book and partly of remembered events involving a group of people associated with don Juan.

The remaining six books once again frequently refer to don Juan; they contain theoretical writings explaining a concept referred to as the "assemblage point" (in "The Fire from Within" and "The Power of Silence," with the latter also containing stories of other naguals), a manual on dreaming ("The Art of Dreaming"), a book describing body movements ("Magical Passes"), a collection of quotations from the other books ("The Wheel of Time"), and, finally, a book of Castaneda's recollections of moments from his life ("The Active Side of Infinity").

Castaneda's writings were presented as real-life accounts, but critical examination showed that they were likely fictional. (According to Robert J. Wallis, in his 2003 book Shamans/Neo-Shamans: Contested Ecstasies, Alternative Archaeologies, and Contemporary Pagans.)
However it has never been fully proved one way or another if Castaneda's writings are fictional or non-fictional.
And being as the author died in 1998, it is unlikely we will ever know for sure.
