How to stop Firefox crashing?
Oh dear, Mr Len, Spinks's PC has a problem Since last night, when I open the Mozilla Firefox browser, nine times out of ten it crashes either immediately or within a few seconds/minutes of accessing a website.
I get a dialogue box saying 'We're sorry, Firefox has crashed'. Then when I restart the browser, the same problem just happens again.
Today Firefox has automatically changed to 'Safe Mode'.
My first thought was a computer virus, but I've run a Norton Antivirus scan and nothing has turned up.
I thought about trying to uninstall/reinstall, but I can't work out how & not sure it'd fix the problem.
I'm using IE for now

Re: How to stop Firefox crashing?
Run CCleaner.
http://www.ccleaner.com/
In it's settings .. for Firefox have it clean.
Temporary files, history, cookies, download history, form history
Then use CCleaner's built in Registry tool.
Run it and let it fix anything it finds.
Also let it clean up any 3rd party temp files it finds..
----------------------------------------
Run Spybot Search & Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/
Update it after installation..
Let it fix anything it finds..
-----------------------------------------
Run Spyware Blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Install it, update it and click on 'enable all protection'
----------------------------------------
Try that and see what happens..
In the meantime, if you hate Internet Explorer as much as I do, you might want to check out Google Chrome as a temp backup..
It's blazingly fast.. and pretty straight forward.

Re: How to stop Firefox crashing?
Many, many thankies, Mr Len. I've cleaned up and removed spyware, so the PC should be feeling a lot better now.
For some reason, Firefox is still crashing, even in Safe Mode. So I'm browsing with Chrome at the moment and think it's brilliant :cool1: Thanks for the recommendation  Managed to import my Firefox bookmarks, which is helpful.
Wondering if it would help if I uninstalled/reinstalled Firefox. Is it possible my version has been corrupted?

Re: How to stop Firefox crashing?
Oh.. Dear..
I would do a complete and full uninstall of Firefox (Backing up your favourites first.. But making a new profile and adding your plugins 'fresh' as opposed to just using your current plugin settings).. then do a reinstall of the latest version.
Did Google Chrome only start crashing after you imported your Firefox Bookmarks to it?
If so, then I suspect your Firefox Profile is corrupted..
But IE7 doesn't crash.. and you've imported your Firefox Bookmarks to IE7 I presume?
If you already have your bookmarks in Chrome you might be able to just import them from Chrome to the new Firefox installation..
But I'm not 100% sure on that. Hmmm..
If your FF bookmarks are imported to IE7 you can for sure import them to the new FF installation.
Hopefully..
:ok:
It's 3AM..
I can think more clearly in the morning.
Oh wait
It is morning.

Re: How to stop Firefox crashing?
Firefox Bookmarks are really just a big html file with all your bookmarks listed on as links..
Very different than IE7..
I say this because if worse comes to worse and you do a complete full reinstall, you can backup your FF bookmarks to any folder on your drive.. and after you've done the reinstall you can open the (corrupt) bookmark file as an html page and re-do your bookmarks 1 by 1 from it. Adding them to the new installation..
It's a pain, but if you import the corrupt profile / bookmarks to the new installation, I fear you'll just end up right back where you are now.
Make a list of your extensions..plugins etc.. you can paste the links to them in notepad or wordpad.
It would be easier than hunting them down again.
Also have the links to the flash/shockwave plugins in that list..
Or........................
If you're able to keep your current ff running for any length of time, try making a new profile ...
As though you were another user..
And don't import any settings from your existing profile.
Might work... :nodz:

Re: How to stop Firefox crashing?
Many, many thankies for all your help, Mr Len It's been a stressful week with this poor computer :twitch: I wasn't feeling brave enough to tackle the uninstall and reinstall by myself, so enlisted my brother's help, esp when trying to backup/salvage the bookmarks.
Comp problems make me feel like :crazy1: :wtf1: :omg1: :whoa1: :dingo1: :acid2: :wtf3:
Now I feel slightly more like :hyper:
Will remember regularly to run the Spybot, etc., just in case, to try and avoid any :gasp1: :exclam1: :huh1:

Re: How to stop Firefox crashing?
Is it working ok now?
Run Spyware Blaster along with Spybot Search & Destroy and CCleaner once a week.
Do a full anti-virus scan once a week too.
You can do the AV scan overnight in order for it not to be too much of a pain.
Just those few things done regularly can save you a world of grief.

Re: How to stop Firefox crashing?
yes, i will follow that advice, certainly :nodz: - this week i have learned the importance of running those scans, etc.
sadly the computer hasn't made the full recovery I thought it had because the problem is more deep-seated than i had thought at first
when searching on the internet, for example using google, almost always i click on a search result and am redirected to a spoof type of website instead
many urls to computer advice, spyware removal tools, etc. are blocked or redirect to spoofs. sometimes persistence prevails and i get them to load, but not always
firefox now crashes at startup
ie is temperamental
chrome crashes frequently
spyware removal tools and that kind of thing (e.g. malware's anti-malware, spybot) are erratic - they get to a certain point in the scan and lock up; same thing happens when trying to update them
norton antivirus crashes before completing a scan and won't reopen
i removed a trojan called smitfraud variant twice on sunday
and also a piece of adware called mywebsearch
but the problems continue
many smitfraud help sites are blocked
have followed instructions/downloaded relevant stuff from those i've been able to access
but both me and bro tried to solve problem, but it's as if the stuff hijacking my computer resist the attempts to fix the problem
i'm sorry this is long and rambling
it's about 5.30am here
i was determined to fix computer
but i think i may have to call in a technician
* i remembered that several days ago attempts were made to attack the computer, but it had seemed norton had blocked them. now it looks as if the attacks were not blocked
** i used a programme called rootrepeal to get rid of problem rootkits (think that's the right phrase), which can cause bad things to happen like what's been happening on this pc, but no problem ones were found.
