Re: Something curious...

You uninstalled CA Anti-Virus, then installed Avast.. and when you re-booted your firefox addons and adblock plus were missing?

Never heard of that before...

I would try a system restore .. selecting a restore point date just before you uninstalled CA Anti-virus.
Or..

Find adblock plus in start>control panel>add/remove programs.. and either repair it (if there is a repair option) or uninstall it, then reinstall it.

For Firefox there is a way to restore your addons..
It's an old method, but it should work for any version.
http://thomasfreudenberg.com/blog/archive/2007/09/20/all-firefox-extensions-gone-after-upgrading-to-2-0-7.aspx

"delete extensions.ini, extensions.cache, and extensions.rdf from your profile folder.
On its next start Firefox will scan for installed extansions and regenerate these files."

This link shows you how to find your Profiles Folder
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox#Finding_the_profile_folder

When you get them restored, there's a great Firefox Tool called FEBE. (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) that let's you backup everything related to Firefox (Bookmarks, settings, addons, scripts) so you can restore them at any time .. if they become corrupted, or if you have to do a re-install of firefox.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2109

I back up my Firefox settings to 3 places with FEBE,,
- My main hard drive
- One of my external hard drives
- and a thumb drive

I tried FEBE before AND it kept messing up too,but that was on my Gateway not my Toshiba which has way more RAM. So I will try again. Thanks for the advice I'll let you know what happens. emoticon

I think FEBE won't be of any use to you in solving this current problem.
It's only for backing up existing FF addons and settings.. and then restoring them if something screws up or you have to reinstall FF again ..
I don't think it's for repairing already corrupted FF addons, extensions and settings.

I'd try the system restore first..
It is capable of fixnig everything in one fell swoop.

Or, if you're not comfortable with that, try the method where you delete the extensions.ini, extensions.cache, and extensions.rdf from your Firefox profile folder.

I can't download or update ANY FireFox add on or extensions! I keep getting an Error message 203. I go to the Error log but there does not seem to be a fix for anything. This is driving me crazy! I really don't want to do a system restore but it looks like I may HAVE to!

I think you need to disable your firewall.
Or your Firefox User Profile is corrupted.
Here's info on Firefox error 203..
And what you can do about it.
(It makes specific references to CA Firewall and Zone Alarm)
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions_-_Firefox#Unexpected_installation_error_-203

Also might be that the CA Uninstall wasn't 100% successful.
If there's bits of it still floating around the registry it could be interfering with other programs.
As long as you've got Internet Explorer installed, you could do a full uninstall of Firefox and reinstal it using IE to download it.

Or you could install the Google Chrome Browser.. it's more like Firefox than IE.
http://www.google.com/chrome

btw.. are you able to run an anti-virus scan with Avast?
If so, I'd do a full scan.

Took three restores but still not 100%,not really sure what I am going to do. Keeping two computers going for now,the old Gateway for some stuff and the Toshiba for pretty much every thing else.

Had to do yet ANOTHER restore today,as I was not able to get onto the internet with the Toshiba while the Gateway worked just fine! I think it is either the Windows updates or the new FireFox update any ideas on that line?

You can uninstall Windows Updates just like any other program from start>control panel>add/remove programs (or in vista, start>control panel>programs & features)
Select the windows update with the most recent date of installation and uninstall it...

You can do a complete unistall of Firefox 3 and go back to firefox 2 ..
Download Firefox 2 here:
http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-2.0.0.20&os=win&lang=en-US

To me it looks like something went wrong with the uninstall of your original anti-virus program..
Or with the installation of your new program.
I think the windows registry has become corrupted ..
If system restore isn't doing a permanent fix then there is something screwed up in the windows system files.

I would uninstall your surrent antivirus and attempt to re-install the one you just uninstalled.

If none of this works, you may have to try and do a windows repair at bootup..

Well all is well now on The Toshiba did just one more restore. Now when Windows prompts me to install IE 8 I just click the box to uncheck it,I really think it was the IE 8 causing ALL the problems. Now I am having trouble downloading AVAST on my GATEWAY,the download shows on the little FireFox box but I CAN'T get it to OPEN!
Thanks for all the help Len!
