HB vs HB
I just recently got the Worst Witch series 3 & 4 DVDs and The New Worst Witch (which I had never seen before.)
I wondering which HB everyone prefered (I probably don't have to really ask, do I?)
But I was really wondering WHY? What makes one actress' performance so strong and memorable? And why was the other one lacking - or just didn't gain fans enthusiasm?
I'm starting to figure out what it is, in my mind... just curious as to what everyone else thinks.
Thanks,
Bella

Re: HB vs HB
They're completely different characters... Even if you ignore what each actor brought to the role, the character is different.

Re: HB vs HB
I agree with Megan. HB in the first series would NEVER eat a cream slice while in the NWW those are that HB's favorite.

Re: HB vs HB
Kate Duchene...
Mutli-dimensional.. brought the character to life.
erm... Don't recall the faux HB's name..
One-Dimensional...
Some of that is in the writing and directing of course..
But most of it is the difference between a really good character actress developing a character... and an actress reading lines.

Re: HB vs HB
The lines are worded differently. The way the sentences are put together...The vocabulary. I tend to think of the new ww a bit like fanfiction really...

Re: HB vs HB
It's also the cheeky and resolute nature of Hettie - Mildred was a bit of a victim and gained sympathies - whereas Hettie just flies in the face of authority and next to her the teachers often end up looking like dumb stooges or puppets on her strings. (Not that I blame the Hettie actress - she's doing brilliantly probably playing up to the new director's expectations).
It's hard to tell how capable actors are if they get a boring and one-layered plot and writing.
On the surface, they added all the old ingredients - Miss Cackle, Miss Hardbroom, a batty old teacher, a rebellious young teacher, two best mates, an evil student with a stupid sidekick -
but then, they left it at that.
I think it's not just the new Miss Hardbroom that is letting the performance down - again, maybe the director wanted her to be a weak and insipid character next to the strong lead amongst the pupils - maybe his idea of Miss Hardbroom is one of someone to be laughed at and despised instead of feared and (sometimes) loved - so it might not be entirely the new actresses fault.
What's lacking for me is all that subtext, the subtle jokes, the many literary allusions, the love which went into creating details and the story behind the characters that must have gone on in the writers' and actors' minds even if it wasn't always openly expressed in the plots.
The new series seems to be entirely directed at children whereas every generation could find different things to enjoy in the old worst witch.
as for the new Miss Hardbroom - I wholeheartedly agree with Len on the one-dimensional argument. She's like a cartoon character, not a real-life character, so you cannot really relate to her. She's just pretty flat and lifeless and lacks the wit, vulnerability and depth the old Miss Hardbroom had.
Pity =(

She hardly fills out a sleek black dress the way Kate Duchene could either... :rolleyes1:

Re: HB vs HB
Some parts are written for Kate Duchene and it doesn't fit for an other actress. Also the character has changed. In the NWW it's only a HB light.....

Re: HB vs HB
yep. I miss the scary HB from before. and that's not all - she was more complex than just scary which made it so enjoyable.
