The post above looked to have some great results with sansai.

Has anyone tried their hand at foraging for mushrooms? I've been wondering what varieties are big here.

Hi Koudou,

Yeah I've had luck with parasol mushrooms in fall here. And only twice unfortunately, black morels, in spring, yum yum...

I only stick to 100% sure things, non-mistakable. Need an obaachan tutor.
Still have trouble IDing supposedly easy 'shrooms like oystersヒラタケ and chanterelles. In October/November collected about a kilo of what I thought were oysters but still couldn't positively ID them, had to toss them out, frustrating.

There were some links to Japanese 'shroom pages on the other forum, anyone know them?

For now I'm using Mushroom Picker's Foolproof Field Guide- Jordan

and

Edible and Poisonous Mushrooms of the World- Timber Press, a great book.

Wow, chanterelles and morels! I may be moving to southern Wakayama, so that makes one more thing to look forward to. Thanks for the book recommends. I'll look into them.

Coincidental that you mention finding 'shrooms and throwing them out due to uncertainty. There was a chapter in The Omnivore's Dilemma where the author did the exact same thing. Perhaps it's something every self-newbie forager does at the beginning in the beginning. Perhaps I'll have a similar tale someday.

I think the GP thread dealt with cultivating mushrooms using plugs rather than foraging for them.

Also, I'm sorry to reply so late. I didn't even notice you replied on the same day.
