Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Greetings everyone,
I’m KenElwood and this is the offshoot forum of the long-running Countryside Living Thread over at gaijinpot.com – where a bunch of folks have gotten together to discuss the Japanese countryside, farming, homesteading, plants and animals etc.
A long time member over at gaijinpot, myhobbyis, suggested over a year ago that we create an independent Country Living in Japan Forum. Well, I’m happy to announce that I’ve finally gotten around to making it, so if you've some free time please sign up and join.
Country Living in Japan is a very friendly and informative site......a place to exchange ideas and insights about everything relating to the country and self sufficient life styles here in Japan – a one of a kind community.
This forum has most of the bells and whistles that gaijinpot and other forums have: user avatar, custom sigs, PM box, profiles, smilies, etc and has some things that lots of other forums don't have, CHAT and BLOG, to name a couple. The Ads by Google have nothing to do with me by the way..they're just a part of using this free forum software it seems. Anyway, there's some cool Mushroom adverts that keep appearing so it can't be all that bad I reckon.
If there's another sub-forum you'd like to see added here, please do tell.
Well, being as this is the ‘greetings’ forum, I will go ahead and introduce myself and would like to ask all of the other gaijinpot long timers to re-introduce themselves here as well. Even if it’s just a one liner!!
I go by the name of KenElwood, have been in Japan just over three years, and live the wedlock life with my Japanese wife semi-rural Japan. Over the past year I have been searching for wooded land where I would like to buy or build a homestead, have a great interest in self-reliance, farming, family, living frugally, the mountains, the trees and the air we breathe.
From our neck of the woods to yours
have a good one,
Ken

Hello there, I'm DeepRiverJim
You may know me by a couple of books I’ve written, Sierra Campfire Yarns : Tales, Skits and Songs and DEEP RIVER JIM'S WILDERNESS TRAIL BOOK.
I’m originally a northern New England woodsman, but now lead my life in the sprawling high-country of Hokkaido in what I describe as the "remotest depth of antiquity" - whatever that means.
Great to find an online forum like this here Country Living in Japan one, and thanks to ol’ KenElwood for choosing me to be the moderator of the Woodsman Forum - Although I won’t be doing too much moderating I reckon, just a lot of good old woodsman chattin'.

Hey all.
First, thanks to Ken for getting this board up and running. Let's hope we can all have a lot of fun on these here pages.
Brief Bio: Brit by birth, nomadic by nature. Landed in Japan around 6 years ago for what was to be a short stop, but intrigue and joy got in the way. Lovin' it here.
Living at the southern end of Honshu, in Yamaguchi-ken. Married to a good'un, and we work the field and orchard together.
Interests most pertinent to this forum are fruit trees, veggies and also the fruits of the sea.
Expertise: diggin' holes, without a doubt.

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi All,
Thanks Ken for getting up and running what I only had the fortitude to suggest.
Wow, is all this space really ours?
I'm really looking forward to continuing the eclectic mix of discussion, opinions, photos and practical stuff we've been doing at gaijinpot with old and new friends.
A big welcome to those who join us here. Between us all I hope we can help you with your plans for rural living in Japan or point you to a site that can.
Hailing from Southern England,I've been in Japan for 9 years, first in Hokkaido, then in various places around central Japan before settling in Mie prefecture with my wife and son.
This year saw us take the plunge and buy a rural property with big plans of turning it into a small smallholding. Drop in to our blog
to see what we are up to:
http://myhobbyis.wordpress.com/
In terms of country pursuits:
I'm a keen archer (though currently without a bow), a fly fisherman, though more skilled in worrying the fish than hooking them, wearer of chunky jumpers (think Tom from 'The Good Life') and a bit of a gourmet so indulge me if I go off on one about food now and then

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hello, My name is Kurt and I live with my wife and young daughter in a tea farming community near Shizuoka city. After my wife and I bounced back and forth between Japan and Southern California for two decades we finally decided to put down roots when our little one arrived. I enjoy spending as much time as possible in the Japanese countryside and feel lucky to have a chance to raise our daughter here. Many thanks to Ken and everyone for caretaking this wonderful community! Happy holidays to all! :-)

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi. My name's Andy but i usually sign up to stuff as crayon (short for crayonshinchan, the cheeky blighter with a penchant for showing his anime bum on tv) on forums. I have lived on and off in Japan since 1995 so I guess in all I've spent around 9 years real time in Japan, firstly living in a small Miyagi town called Murata, near the Togatta spa area and conveniently located for snowboarding at Mt Zao in the winter. After that I moved to Sendai and lived there on and off for the next seven years. I've been a lurker on the gaijinpot forums for a while now and my favourite thread was the country living in Japan thread. I also looked at Ken Elwoods blog through the GP site. I like what you guys are doing and hope to copy at least some of it! I love the convenience of big cities but the more mature part of me wants to live away from the hustle and bustle.
I am moving back to Japan from the UK in January and will be living just outside Nagoya - maybe we could meet up Ken Elwood - and you could show me around? That would be nice.
Oh yeah, married, no kids:P

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hello,
I'm flojin on the other board. I live in New York City with my 4 year old son, and my Japanese wife. We want to live in rural Japan. We WOOOfed in Nagano last summer and enjoyed it. We're working on finding a way back, but we are having some trouble because her family doesn't want us to do it. So, we're on our own trying to figure out how to get me a spousal visa, a job, and a place to live.
In the meantime, we check the internet, talk about moving, and make the best of things here in New York. We're also interested in nerds, and if anyone wants to see some minidocumtaries we've made on nerds in New York, you can take a look at our website:
www.idratherbe.tv
I enjoy reading your posts everyone, keep up the good work and thanks to those who've been kind enough to offer advice and words of encouragement.

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi. My tag is dataGecko, and I’ve been lurking on the gaijinpot board for a few months, mostly coming back just to read the Countryside Living thread, which I’ve found fascinating and very informative. I am so impressed to read your stories, as it is helping me formulate my own future plans.
Background in a nutshell: Australian, and met my lovely wife at uni here. Married two years now, no kids. She’s from Kyoto, so we often talk of moving to Japan, but as I don’t speak Japanese (learning slowly!) it’s the old problem of how to support ourselves there. We are both strong believers in living a simple, healthy, (dare I say) eco-friendly life. While I grew up in the country side (the bush) in Australia, I’ve lived in major cities for many, many years now, but always yearned for a life in the country side again, somewhere peaceful and green. There is so much I don’t know though, about Japan and the reality of day to day life there, and this is what I’d love to chat to you nice folk about – the day to day realities - how to adjust to being a gaijin who will be accepted into a rural community (if that is indeed possible), how to cope with the Japanese bureaucracy, how to find good information for a non-Japanese speaker.
I think we are in the same place as sakamoto, looking at future in country-side Japan, planning and learning what skills we can here until that time comes. I’m looking forward to reading and joining in the discussions here.
--- gecko, living a good life.
