Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi, Jonathanb here. I'm working in Kobe but frequently get out to the countryside in Gifu where we have land.
I'm currently preparing to make the move to Gifu.
I'm glad this forum exists and I'm looking forward to many good discussions.

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hello All,
Name is Jeremy, I have been lurking around GaijinPot gathering interesting nuggets of information regarding land purchasing and country living. I am very interested in hearing from people regarding importing houses, (in-the-sticks) land price calculations, etc.
I have been in Japan 10 years now, coding for food, and I would like to build a log house or import a kit and build as much myself as possible. After visiting/inspecting some of the sample houses, my wife and I found ourselves growing quite fond of them.
Does anyone have any log house manufacturer recommendations??? I have interrogated the salespeople with many questions and received a lot of good answers, but I really would like to hear about pricing with regard to list price and actual cost.
I enjoyed everyone’s pictures so far, I was very impressed with Johnny LaRue’s pictures. Ideally that is the environment I crave, I need, I will borrow from the bank for...(you get the picture)

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
My name is Tom and I have also posted on gaijinpot as TomT. I am currently in Minnesota, USA but will be back in Japan on the 22nd of May.
I have a wife and a house in Oirase-machi (formerly known as Shimoda-machi) Kamikita-gunn Aomori-ken. I lived in Japan from 2000 to 2007 when I returned to the states to go to school for a year. I have worked as an HVAC technician, Automotive Service technician and lastly as a Telecommunications and Networking technician for the US military.
My house is located in the middle of a bunch of fields that local farmers grow rice, diachon, emo, cabbage and a variety of other veggies. I enjoyed watching the farmers grow their crops and their dedication to their work. I have spoke to a few of them with my extremely limited Japanese skills and have found them to be very approachable and friendly. It got to the point where they would give me veggies or leave them on my porch before I was even up for the day. I hope when I return I can integrate with them, help them out for exchange of some of their knowledge so I might be capable of sustaining my own crops some day. My wife has already informed me that the town has alloted areas of land for rent (3000 yen a year, uncertain of size) as well as loaning equipment out for people to try their hand at farming. It sounds like a lot of fun, and hard work, to me!
I have already found this forum, as well as the Country Living threads on GaijinPot, to be very informative as well as inspiring. Keep up the good work.

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi all,
Been following the site for a little while now and finally decided I'd better sign up so I can join in the conversations.
I'm currently living in Otaki-mura in Nagano's Kiso valley, where I'm conducting doctoral fieldwork in environmental anthropology.
I'm interested in community resource management and use issues and also forest history.
You can read more about me, my research, and life in Otaki at my blog: In the Pines

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi Taintus, and welcome to this spot. I'd describe it as a kind of "ura menu" from the gaijinpot country living thread, being that it's slow, but peeps drop by occasionally. Hopefully, you'll help it grow.
A lot of people are mad on trees here, and thoughts of self-sustainability seem to grow by the day, so hopefully you'll have some thoughts provoked.
Nice blog, btw, and lovly pics. Your striking Oct 8 post about knowledge being lost is well-recognised by a small band of alien country-livers here in Japan.
Cheers,
KC

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
I currently reside in Nagoya City , down the street from Nagoya Castle. I was originally an exchange student here, and then finished school Summer 07. Between that time and April 2008 I was an office volunteer for Georgia Organics. ( http://georgiaorganics.org if interested, but the site pales in comparison to their actual outreach) I cannot speak good enough things about them, so suffice it to say that my time with them was very enlightening.
I've been doing the ALT thing since April. It was by last-minute chance that I moved back to Nagoya, so I hope to move as far into the countryside as the job market allows for 2009.
Indeed the postings here are few and far between and, if i want to change that, I should contribute.
I also should mention that as of today, I have finished reading Michael Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemma". I'd been meaning to pick it up after browsing through it, and I am glad I eventually did.

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi everyone!
Rick (aka Yabanjin or SK-1) here from Gotemba, Shizuoka. I have been in Japan since 1993, moved to Gotemba in 2000 and loved it, so I stayed! Just moved into the new homestead in the country (finally!) with my wife and daughter.
Right now I am 'just' working on getting the garden set up, the garage functional, the house organized, the fields ready for winter...and going to the job everyday. This leaves Very little time to update my blog. Oh, hunting season is here and takes up all available time I have left!
I really enjoyed everyone's posts and the common sense info you guys are passing on! I hope I can add to the conversation, and hope I can share what little I know.
--- See you in the Yama!
SK-1 out!

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi, I am a preacher and have always wanted to travel the world and see new things. I generally like to see the countryside and meet new people when traveling because most cities are just way to crowded and way to much alike.

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi Folks,
My name is Phil and I'm currently roughing it in central London. Spent maybe five years bumming around India/Nepal/Thailand and getting heartily sick of big city life now. My wife (who is a Japanese citizen) and I are planning to emmigrate to Japan early next year to start our own self sufficient life.
Have only just discovered this site and the amazing country living thread over at GP and got to say what a wonderful resource these pages are. You guys have assembled an awesome wealth of information, thank you very much.
At the moment we're both signed up to a bunch of country living type courses that should teach us how to smoke, cure and preserve what food we grow and raise and we're also taking animal husbandry and beekeeping classes to better prepare these two urbanites for what lays ahead.
Haven't settled on any particular areas to start looking for a homestead yet but may end up in the Kanto area as that's where my wife's family are

Re: Country Living in Japan: Who's who?
Hi FelixD, wow, good luck on the adventure you guys are starting. You are right, there are some wonderful people on here and the GP thread, and a great wealth of info is buried in the threads. I find it hard to keep up at GP, but things are much more slow lane here. Love to get more of the serious poster back here for more discussion though. :-) So welcome, and keep us posted on how things go!
