Log House

Hi CodeforFood and everyone,

Although I didn't build my log home I think it's a good idea to import or buy a kit and build as much of it as you can to save money. Let's get right to the nitty-gritty. If you buy a built log home from a builder expect to pay 50万円 per tsubo or more. It's basically the same price for buying any kind of construction, post and beam, whatever. If you buy a kit you can expect about half of that.
If you have some carpentry skills or lots of determination and time you can do it with some help. But getting a loan on a kit may be difficult, if not impossible. Probably need a huge downpayment.

The manufacturer I bought from, True Craft Log Structures, from BC Canada, has since been bought out by Lincoln Logs company so I've heard. They were a small company with some Japanese staff who exported kits here.
So, sorry I can't really recommend a manufacturer.

After years of searching, I got very lucky and found a local carpenter who was dying to build his first log home. He didn't mind making little profit on the model home(mine) to launch his log home building venture. So I got my place for less than 50万円 per tsubo. He also helped me find the land and talked the price down a little.

If possible you could try this approach. Find a young, good local carpenter or builder who likes rustic styles and see if they are into it. Also check the 森林組合,those guys are ususally into it. Some of them get laid off in winter, so they may be available then. It's a very cool/macho/status thing for a guy to be a log home builder and you can work with that. Anyone who HAS built log homes is a developer who is gonna go for maximum profit. Hope this helps.

Here's a cool slideshow of a small handmade log cabin with a living roof. (And a cool 80's soundtrack by Icehouse I believe.)

Here's another way to build a log home. Looks daunting but do-able. I'd love to make a sauna or cottage like this.
