Re: Composting Toilets

I'm glad you posted this, as I'd been thinking about these things since running across a similar post on GP. Oh, and sorry but the only thing I've got are questions, not recommendations.
I was wondering why this kind of (automated?) toilet preferred? So far, I've come up with it being for people who don't mind disposing of their own fertilizer, but not too often. Or, it being for people who could care less about fertilizer in general. (like in an apartment)

But does this justify the price tag? It's 2500 bucks for a toilet one has to think a little less about emptying, as opposed to 100 for something I can bang together from things bought at a hardware store.
I'd really like input from someone else on this, as I'm sure my view is not the end all be all. Would anyone mind giving me some perspective?

Agree with you there, the price is crazy. I have read about DIY composting toilets in some local mags here, and it doesn't sound that complicated really - though I have NO experience to back this up of course. ;-)

I think the Japanese may have the knack of over complicating this sort of thing to keep it 'clean'. ;-)

While the DIY road is interesting, I wonder how you would go with approvals in Japan. :-( Its the sort of think local councils are always hyper-worried about.

Sounds like a good source is: Humanure Handbook, Joseph Jenkins, Jenkins Publishing
1999, ISBN 0-9644258-9-0

Here are some Aussie links for DIY fans. If you can find similar in Japan, please post them. :-)

And for a $25 composting toilet, try this: http://www.wormsloos.com.au/PDF/SawDustLoo.pdf

I asked for perspective, and now I've been given it. I completely forgot to factor in troublesome neighbors.

I can see it now:
One day they come over and, as is normal during a visit, ask where the bathroom is. You tell them and think nothing more of it. Next thing you know, their is a tremendous town hall meeting that needs to be held and your name gets top billing on the unbelievably short list of concerns.
