Is it true that Jon Lord played with Jimi Hendrix?

It is true that Jon Lord played with Jimi. Here's the story as told by Jon:

Yes, it is true that I had a "Jam Session" with the divine Jim in or about the Spring of 1970 at a club in New York City called "Steve Paul's Scene Club." Jimi used to go there almost nightly as a matter of course when he was at home in NYC and one night I was sitting having a drink, when he came over and re-introduced himself - we had first met in 1968 in Los Angeles after the Cream/Deep Purple concert in Inglewood - and asked if I would play organ for a bit of a jam. It was with Stephen Stills on bass and Buddy Miles on drums and Dave Mason on sax. Afterwards he asked if I'd be there the next night, and if so would I like to do it again. I did, and it was equally enjoyable - two great and memorable (for me at least) nights. I said goodnight and "see ya" to him after that second night, but sadly I never saw him again.

This always interested me, and I don't remember ever finding out if there were any tapes ever made of these impromptu sessions? Personally, I'd LOVE to hear them! emoticon

Yeah that´s true, no idea where it´s on though.

In fact Jon used to do a hell lot of sessions in the 60s where he always left uncredited for ("You Really Got Me" for instance).

a) Damn! Then you're no help at all, are ye? emoticon ( emoticon / emoticon )

b) True. Thankfully, there's been a lot 'unearthed', so to say, over the last couple of decades, including the one you mention.
I remember when I first found that out, it was so cool. The great thing about a lot of those '60s sessions is that a lot of them can be relatively easily obtained/listened to.
The one this topic/thread's about, though...I've never even heard a whisper of a rumor regarding any tapes of it and I'm wondering if a 'Sherlockian Magnifying Glass Approach' emoticon to any listings of Hendrix boots I can find might be in order.

Yeah and the exciting thing about You Really Got Me is that Jimmy Page is most likely on that one as well. So you have Lord and Page playing on this one before either of their bands were born.

Yeah, isn't that the track Page claimed credit for years for as far as whatever guitar soloing - reportedly actually done by Dave Davies - appears on it when all he actually did was play rhythm guitar?
Having Lord + Page together for a track is cool, isn't it? I always had the feeling back in the '70s that Page would've almost lierally killed to have a keyboard player of Lord's skill in Zeppelin.
Just to toss a few drops of petrol on the ever-burning embers of rumor - have you heard of Blackmore + Page playing a number of '60s sessions together? The Kinks one just may be one of them, for all I know! emoticon
According to Blackmore, Page + Blackmore did a lot of sessions together, primarily as rhythm players, but together...

Well according to Jon Lord Davies wasn´t present on the sessions for You Really Got Me at all and the riff might actually turn out to be Page´s as well.

I'm wondering if a 'Sherlockian Magnifying Glass Approach' emoticon ...

...well, the initial application of this approach is looking a bit bleak so far. By that I mean I've quickly perused Nogel's* excellent (I know, I know...it hasn't been updated for a while - but it's still excellent!) "Deep Purple Diary" - just for a start - and it appears that DP at least isn't reported to have been anywhere near New York, the state or the city anytime near or about the "spring of 1970". This, of course, doesn't totally exclude the possibility that Lord was there outside of DP, for whatever reason(s)...
I'm thinking perhaps Lord actually meant either the spring of 1969 or maybe December of 1969 - around the time Deep Purple reportedly laid down the never-to-be-released emoticon tracks "Lay, Lady Lay" + "Glory Road".
Nevertheless, the search goes on! emoticon

*I'd ask Nogel for feedback/help, but I somehow have the feeling I might get the same answer we got regarding the "Christopher Cross played in/with Deep Purple" situation, i.e "It'll be in the book" - Nigel Young, 2005. ( emoticon / emoticon )

I find that very hard to believe> Zeppelin didn't need a keyboard player, of any calibre - it wouldn't have been the same band with prominent keyboards. They already had their sound and their niche (a very BIG, lucrative niche), and why would they want to mess with that?

(I'm talking about a full-time, integrated keyboard player, of course, not some part-time doodling by the bass player.)

See that´s the reason why Jonesy albeit one of the most important and creative parts of LZ is the most underrated one, he´s seen as "the bass player" while he´s so much more than that. Except bass he played organ(Your Time Is Gonna Come, Thank You), synths, mellotron(The Rain Song), grand piano(No Quarter), mandolin(The Battle Of Evermore) and more and that good(just listen to the jazzy live improvs of No Quarter) I think he had a big hand in the direction the band took from the fourth album over Houses Of The Holy and Physcial Graffiti, he brought some innovation in the band after the first albums that technically weren´t much more but blues rock standars rearranged.

I have had e-mail correspondence with Jon over this.

I tried to work out a date using Hendrix's Visual Documentary and the Charlesworth book.

I concluded that it must have been during Mark 1, but Jon was sure it was during Mark 2.

I bet Nigel does know the answer. Are you going to tell us now, or shall we wait for the book?
