Re: So Has JLT Earned More Respect?
Wonder if I ever get tired of shouting out here how good I think Slaves & Masters are...
Not yet, anyway. I REALLY like it. It falls into the major category of "non-important" music, and that might be very tasty sometimes, much better than everything trying to be more important than everything else.
Here are great melodies, a smooth production, all over a nice touch. Some great instrumentalism here and there too.
I like it!

For god´s sake: IS not ARE! You are talking about an album and not actual slaves and masters!(I hope!)
I like it as well. I don´t enjoy it as most records but it´s quite good having it in the backround. But I think I´ve only heard it 3 times entirely in the 3 years I have it. I don´t mind it too much, but I really can´t say I´d hate it.

Re: So Has JLT Earned More Respect?
Slaves and Masters is ok, for a Rainbow record. If the band would have called themselves Rainbow at the time, I don't think the record would have met such criticism but, as It is under the Deep Purple banner, It is a lot harder for me to accept as Deep Purple. I think it has been at least 3 years since I last played it.

Re: So Has JLT Earned More Respect?
This coming from a guy who can't spell Taliesyn,
or was that both of you?
S&M is not all that bad,
I happen to still enjoy it once and a while, but that doesn't mean I think it wasn't a big mistake.
I really like Breakfast In Bed

Re: So Has JLT Earned More Respect?
Yeah, I guess it's not TOO bad for a RainDeep PurpBow album. Still, 17th out of 17 in the Deep Purple studio catalogue, in my non-humble opinion.
Hell, I even like "Stormbringer","Come Taste The Band" + "Purpendicular" more than "Slaves and Masters" - and that's saying something!
Like Gillan'sMicstand says "It is not all that bad"...well, it isn't all that good, either.

Thank you for finishing my sentance but some things go without saying.
Btw Purpendicular is an all out masterpeice and deserves it's place alongside any Deep Purple album IMHO.
It's not classic in the typical sence, but thats where it's beauty lies,it was a successful artistic departure,
S&M on the other hand was a complete flop at trying to
be an artistic departure.
Therefore I can see why you like Abandon better,
cause it was safer and louder than Purpendicular.
I'll take danger over safety in rock and roll any day.
Along with the volume there has to be some quiet parts as well, look no further than Fireball for proof.

Re: So Has JLT Earned More Respect?
Everybody thinks JLT ruined S&M. No one blames Blackmore or Glover. Didn't they wrote most of the music while JLT made only the lyrics?
And who offered the job in the first place?

Re: So Has JLT Earned More Respect?
JLT wrote the lyrics to
Truth Hurts
The Cut Runs Deep
Love Conqures All
The rest of the lyrics were co-written
by he and Roger.
