OETM IS REVIEWED by Geoff Barton in classic Rock and gets a pretty good write up and a 7/10 rating , stating generally that gillan doesn't cut loose and the songs are a little short... missing the point i think.By the way gillan is at number six in the top 50 greatest rock singers of all time..ever.
1/ Freddy Mercury
2/ Paul Rodgers
3/Robert Plant
4/ Steve Marriot
5/ Rod Stewart
6/ Ian Gillan
7/ Ronnie James Dio
8/ Sammy Hagar?
9/ Steve Perry
10/ Janis Joplin
15/ David Coverdale
24/ Glenn Hughes
very similar to the list in the press a few months back if not the same one

I've listened to it three times now. One or two weaker tracks, otherwise it might be the best Gillan album since Mr. Universe.

The production is almost perfect, the man sings excellently, and I really must emphasize the obvious importance of Steve Morris as a writer. The artistic success of this album must be credited to him, too.

As an album this is a stronger collection of songs than most albums out there.

This is so different to most stuff IG has done in the past so at times I heard not so obvious similarities to other artists. For some reason Deal with It reminds me of latter day Dire Straits and Knopfler solo material, while somewhere else Jeff Buckley came to mind.

I'm only mentioning this to highlight two things: this album is both different and better to most of IG's work with DP of late. And that the man's spectrum of tones as a singer is remarkable on the album.

I think this album has far more commercial potential than any album DP would put out. Let's see if the record company puts any effort in promoting it.

Favourite track so far: The Sky Is Falling Down.

Really like this album Rezi but I wouldnt rate it as his best since Mr Universe!Glory Road and Future Shock were great albums and Toolbox was possibly the last truly great screaming vocal performance Ian gave on an album.OETM is though a fine performance from Ian in an understated yet very versatile way where he uses his matured voice superbly and shows he can still deliver a song like few others.Far better album IMHO than ROTD

Nice little album, it's the natural follow-up to Dreamcatcher and very similar in many ways. I don't know that it's an album I'll return to a lot, but it's pleasant background music to relax to. I agree with many others here who have stated how natural his voice sounds with this material. He's much better at this stuff than trying to get through Into The Fire these days and I appreciate that very much. He hasn't sounded this good on an album since 1998.

Good to see that Amazon have their finger on the pulse of rock music:

CD Description
The Deep Purple vocalist and founder member Ian Gillan continues his solo recording career with 'One Eye To Morocco', his first after a gap of ten years. The album is so-titled because of a phrase Gillan heard while in Cracow, describing someone who is cross-eyed. Gillan co-wrote much of the album with his Deep Purple bandmate Steve Morris while on a break from touring, and much of the recording took place in Ontario. Musically, Gillan eschews traditional rock arrangements more synonymous with Deep Purple in favour of more extensive and varied instrumentation.

This is a quite frequent mistake. In this interview with IG, they make the same one:

http://www.lalibre.be/culture/musique/article/491317/ian-gillan-toujours-d-attaque.html

Now it's true that, phonetically, it's rather difficult to make the distinction between Steve Morse and Steve Morris, two guitarists playing with the same guy!

I am very pleased to see Gillan , Coverdale & Hughes in there, but if, as best rock singers EVER, Elvis is not AT LEAST in the first five, then I really wonder who the hell made up such list!?!

Re: One Eye To Morroco

beaverfever submits his two cents:

This CD is quite good and I find myself drawn back to it again and again (I didn't even know it existed until a couple weeks ago, four months past release date). To be honest, I'm quite surprised at how much I like it. This is not the greatest of compliments, but my expectations were vastly exceeded. A friend, who is far from being a serious Deep Purple fan (and so his opinion isn't 'tainted'), also likes it very much.

Usually I don't see bands more than once, and my previous experience seeing Gillan was okay, but I'd really like to see the band playing this material. It would be wonderful if they didn't play SOTW, but I recognize that song as being inevitable, for reasons that I don't entirely agree with.
