Uriah Heep - Wake The Sleeper
Just a few words on Heep's new opus. Wake The Sleeper is a good album. Not as good as we could have expected, but fair enough.
It goes right in the line of Sea of Light and Sonic Origami, adding a touch of roughness which reminds us of Very 'Eavy, Very 'Umble.
The album titled opening instrumental would indeed wake up a dead man, without being too original. The highlight of the album is the Overload track with a chilling tap-sounding riff.
Another interesting number is What Kind of God which starts with an epic song (sounding like a folk anthem) but which, during its second part, allow Box and Lanzon to deliver an incredible sound wave! A must-hear!

I was really impressed on the first listen, but found I got bored with it pretty quickly. I didn't find anything that took my breath away like some of the material on Sea Of Light, but it's a vast improvement on Sonic Origami. I really was hoping for something special after waiting 10 years for it, so maybe my expectations led to my disappointment? I'll give it a few more listens before I file it away...

He I remember that he always started off his concerts with 'Sweet Freedom'

I've given the album several more spins and what I love the most is the GREAT Hammond sound Phil Lanzon gets. Just about every song has that vintage growl, which makes this a joy to listen to. Obviously it is growing on me, but it's not the individual songs that are winning me over. It's the sound of the band that is doing that. Don't get me wrong, there are some great songs here too, but the overall sound is very warm and has a great 70's vibe to it.

IMO Wake The Sleeper was the best hard rock album released in 2008, and by far UHs best record since 1976.
