I'm not going to be able to name all sources because I remember the quotes more than anything, so people will just have to believe some of them according to how well they can sense through knowing enough about him to think he would say such things.

For instance, I can't remember where I read this one, but it was a BN interview sometime in the last ten years.

If you didn't play guitar, what do you think you would be doing instead.

"If I didn't have music, I don'tknow what I would have done, probably turned to crime"

"[...] Simon Robinson: the head of the Deep Purple fan club, but he doesn't really like them. Which is brilliant! He doesn't like the band, or anything they do, and he's the president of the fan club!"

Interview (by Neil Jeffries) in 1995, printed in MBTP Issue 3 (Jan 1997).

Simon Robinson isn't head of the Deep Purple 'fan club'. He runs the DPAS: Deep Purple Appreciation Society. Odd that it's quoted he doesn't like the band. This is the same guy that enthused profusely about Purpendicular and his writings in Darker Than Blue are the complete opposite of the notion that he doesn't like the band. But then its quoted from the MBTP rag, and that says all you need to know. emoticon

I think Simon is a much bigger fan of Deep Purple than Ritchie Blackmore himself. I wouldn't trust Ritchie Blackmore if he would advise me which Purple tracks to listen to. I'm not sure Ritchie can be a fan of whoever anyway. Certainly not of himself.

Q: (Blackmore's Night was in the middle of a 6.8 earthquake while playing in Tokyo during October of 2004) - What happened?

A: "You know I drink before I go on stage - I have a few, you know? So I had no idea there was an earthquake going on at all! To me it was like, 'Hey, this is good Johnny Walker Black!', it was doing the trick for me! It wasn't until a soundguy came screaming out from the wings, 'Stop the show!'....so I knew something was afoot. I thought about stopping the show for a second or two and went, 'Nah, we'll play on' and we got applause for that from the audience. I think the audience was more afraid of us stopping the show than th place coming down and them all being killed." - Ritchie Blackmore in the Artisan News Service, November 9th 2004.

In response to the "BabyFace" project, circa 1971 - 1973:
"I said that the only way I'd stay in Deep Purple was if we completely changed the band. 'Get a new bass player and I'll stay.' Ian (Paice) and Jon (Lord) said 'o.k.' Glenn Hughes came in, so I stayed...Ian (Paice) and I were gonna form another band with Phil Lynott from Thin Lizzy, actually. It was like 'Hendrix #2' - Phil looked like Hendrix, sounded like Hendrix...he was just singing - Roger was playing because he was a better bass player then..." - Ritchie Blackmore in the Trouser Press, 1978

Q: Without Lord & Blackmore, the two whom formed the band, is there any Deep Purple?

A: "I think people see Ian Gillan as Purple since I left - the band wil probably always exist in some form. I think Steve Morse is a very, very good guitarist, so let them do thier thing. We (Blackmore & Deep Purple) ar not enemies. I still have contact with them - well, some of them at least." - Ritchie Blackmore in Svenska Dagbladet, April 22nd, 2002

Q: Is there a spark of hope that you'll be on stage with Deep Purple once more?

A: "Maybe I'll play one or two days for the fans, not anything too serious, though. For a few days I might do it, but certainly not for any longer than a week...I have a problem with Deep Purple's management - not with the band members." - Ritchie Blackmore in Speaker magazine, January, 2003

(Blackmore generally discussing Deep Purple, Mks.II ['69-'73], II(a)['84-'88] & II(b)['92-'93] :
"Although none of us will ever be the best of friends off stage, it's an explosive gelling of individuals which hits the button on stage and on record." - Ritchie Blackmore in Rock World, 1993

(Blackmore discussing Steve Morse)
"Brilliant guitar player...he was one of my favorites in Dixie Dregs. He was playing some stuff 15 years ago and I thought, 'Christ! Who is this guy?' Very fast and very exact." - Ritchie Blackmore in Guitarist (UK) January, 1996

I think that's where Blackmore touches hypocrisy in saying (just as in the interview quoted by MrEd) that he has a problem with the management, not with the band. Let's say that the band had a problem with him. The management will just sniff the money where it is, because that's their job.

Re: If we're going to quote Blackmore...

Blackmore had problems with the management and he had a problem due to the fact that Gillan came back for the 25th anniversary. Reason? My guess would be that Blackmore didn't want Gillan in the band because he lives a completely different life than TMIB himself, Blackmore wanted to take Purple down the AOR road as he did with Slaves & Masters and he knew that Gillan wouldn't agree since Gillan is more of a rock'n'roll kinda guy. Aboeve everything, he would loose control over the band!

"It can't be hemorrhoids! Everybody knows he's a perfect asshole!" Ian Gillan commenting on Blackmore's mystery illness causing show cancelations...a long time ago... Taken from Metal Hammer's "Motormouth"!

Of course you're right, he had problems with the management, but those problems were not the ones which caused the final MkII break-up.

Blackmore didn't change his tune by complaining about the management till "much" after he expressed a pocket full of other reasons for leaving out of his own frustrations.

"I left for business reasons, and the fact that the manager was getting 33% of our earnings from the golf courses"
Guitar Magazine 1999

Simon Robinson is a hero, and Neil Jeffries is a twit! emoticon
