Interview (by Neil Jeffries) in 1995, printed in MBTP Issue 3 (Jan 1997).

Simon Robinson isn't head of the Deep Purple 'fan club'. He runs the DPAS: Deep Purple Appreciation Society. Odd that it's quoted he doesn't like the band. This is the same guy that enthused profusely about Purpendicular and his writings in Darker Than Blue are the complete opposite of the notion that he doesn't like the band. But then its quoted from the MBTP rag, and that says all you need to know. emoticon

For what it's worth, I've heard Ritchie say that about SR quite a few times.

Yeah, but what was reportedly said was not only did SR not like the band but also 'nor anything they do'. So I will repeat again: SR is the same guy that enthused profusely about Purpendicular. Nuff said. emoticon

Blackmore says a lot of things which are throw away lines for effect and for humour and that are quite meaningless, including apparently that SR 'is no real fan'. Well, for Blackmore to say that is just a downright fib! We all know that SR is the biggest DP fan on the planet, after me that is. emoticon

What's wrong with MBTP? I subscribe to both MBTP and DTB and I think the former is much more critical of its subject matter (RB) than DTB is of DP.

Besides, afaik, the interview was only (later) published in MBTP, not commissioned by the magazine.

Why is Jeffries a twit? I've enjoyed reading his articles.

I have a question regarding this subtopic: Was this quote part of an article/interview that Jeffries did for Mojo magazine sometime in '95 & which appeared in Mojo sometime in '96, or was this an 'exclusive' (for lack of a better term) article/interview for MBTP?

For making light of such rubbish concerning your idol, and Simon. emoticon

But seriously, Neil was not so bad, I should know, I have read countless works of his, and have countless more I've passed over because I din't have any interest in the artists.
I didn't say he couldn't write, but his reading and information conveyance is another story, considering this particular reason to be talking about him. emoticon
But one thing... just because you enjoy his OLD articles, doesn't mean he isn't a twit. emoticon
He was an editor too... where is he now, anybody know? emoticon

I was present for this interview, which was conducted at the Normandie Inn over many beers and glasses of red wine.
If I remember correctly, it was going to be for Mojo but I don't think it saw the light of day, which is a big shame as it is a very good interview. It went on for hours and Ritchie was very frank. I think that Neil ran out of tape on his recorder and had to do some shorthand.
Neil gave permission to MBTP to publish the interview and as far as I know, he still writes and regularly contributes to Classic Rock.

Thanks Rob, thats one mag I never subscribed to, and can't be found on shelves in the northwest of America, but I do sometimes catch certain intervies online.

Sounds like mixing beer and wine is not the best idea, good thing I don't do that, I would come off much wrose than I already do. emoticon
I wasn't engaging in any during my exclusive interview with you... I swear! emoticon

That might explain some of the content then. emoticon

Re: If we're going to quote Blackmore...

Simon once called Gillan's vocal peformance on Born Again "blistering" too, but that was years after the album came out, because he passed it over purposely for some time, saying he doesn't purchase Black Sabbath albums... now we're on to SR quotes. emoticon
Boy did he regret that one, but had no problem admitting that.emoticon

Here's a secret I bet nobody knew, Simon is a big "Talking Heads" fan too, so much that he started up a fanzine of theirs in the mid 80's too, but I have no idea what level he took it to, I suspect he discontinued it.
