What is the blues anyway and is there a way to define it? The only thing I would label as bluesy throughout all the different versions of Mistreated would be DC's lyrics/delivery, because it has that "baby left me..." theme. I wouldn't say Rainbow's version is particularly bluesy, if anything a showcase for RB (and a good one at that).
quote: Rainbow did it simply because it is an excellent song, that's all.
The same reason WS did it I'm sure, but also because it was DC's (and RB's) number basically.
quote: Daniel, yes, I do like RB far more than BM and MM. What "mysterious" there's to liking one guitar player over another, or one band's version of a song to another band's version I frankly have no idea of.
Nothing of course, it was just a joke knowing your fondness for RB.

Re: Reading 79 Lovehunter tour
I think DC at some point tried to suggest RB didn't have much to do with the track, whereas RB himself and at least Hughes have confirmed RB had written the music well before DC was in DP.
It was a Mk3 highlight. Interestingly, Mk4 didn't play it. I wonder if they tried it at rehersals.

Well, anything Glenn says should be taken with a grain of salt , but in this case RB and GH are probably right. But regardless, IMO, it's DC's vocal that makes it stick out, hence it being DC's number to me, the same way Soldier of Fortune used to be his "anthem" even though RB and co probably wrote the music.

I think we should be glad they didn't. The thought of Bolin struggling to make that riff his own is not a pleasant one.

The time where DC allegedly claimed RB hadnt much to do with Mistreated was around the late 70s early 80s when there was the huge rivalry between the purple family bands RJD always introduced Mistreated as a song that Ritchie wrote and of course Bernie Marsden introduced it as a song David wrote!daft really but there you go!During Mk3 Glenn would introduce it as a song Ritchie wrote as well in fact he does so during the Cal Jam intimating that Ritchie had written a while before. As far as SOF is concerned it was a joint project with RB and DC in fact the rest of the band didnt want to play it at the time before Ritchie pulled rank im sure i read somewhere that this was one of the reasons RB decided to leave purple nowadays of course BN play it and it is introduced as a song that Ritchie wrote with David. As for who did the best version of Mistreated its down to personal taste i suppose but my favourite versions are
1.Burn studio version
2.Made In Europe
3.Whitesnake Reading 80
4.any of above depending on mood

Why is that? Or do you mean as in "any celeb"?
Anyway, I also connect the sudden "DC wrote Mistreated" stuff with DC's attempts to annoy RB at any given chance in the late 1970s and from then on.

Because Glenn is prone to exaggerating, saying things like his latest tour band rivals what DP did, that every new album he releases is the best one so far. After a while you start taking things with a grain of salt whenever he says something, which is a shame.

I didn't know this. Where did you read about this?
It was told by long-time fan and journalist (Deep Purple Forever, Slice, etc) Michael Eriksson in either one of his magazines or MBTP. When ME was interviewing WS (EDIT: in the early 1980s I think), BM made a point of stating he thinks "RB is not among the 100 best guitarists", or something like that. It's obvious that kind of a statement is meant as an insult.
As for GH, he did regularly introduce Mistreated as written by RB "about two years ago" during the Burn tour in 1974. I'm sure DC would have objected had that not been the case. I recall GH said the track was there when he joined the band, which was before DC.
RB also said he didn't want Gillan to sing it.
But I agree, DC gave the song its vocal stamp and it is against his performances later versions will forever be considered. LIke I wrote above, originally I thought saying someone could do it better than DC sounded silly to me, but after listening to the Rainbow versions of 1976-78 and WS versions I have (L...ITHOTC & Reading 1979), I think not only is it played much better by Rainbow (e.g. Carey's subtle, on the fly backing riffs are superb, check for example Düsseldorf & Nürnberg 1976), but also sung better. I read Roy Davies say Dio did the song better than DC (after DP, i.e. with WS) and encouraged people to compare. Well, finally I did and now agree with Roy.
I think DC overdid the song with WS. He should have just let his natural tone do the trick. Now it reminds me of Plant's 'blues' vocals which I think was much more slightly effeminate hysteria rather than what I've come to know and love as blues. I think the best vocal performance of Mistreated I've ever heard is on MIE.
So is Reading 1980 out officially? If you guys praise the version I'm sure it's good, at least in the sense that it is exceptional.

Re: Reading 79 Lovehunter tour
I'm stunned by anyone claiming to be able to detect "real emotion" better the next person.
Basically WS's versions were inferior to Rainbow's, IMO, because overdoing finger vibrato, whining harmony guitars and shouting - not to mention talk box guitar solos - have quite little to do with blues.
Rainbow did it simply because it is an excellent song, that's all.
Daniel, yes, I do like RB far more than BM and MM. What "mysterious" there's to liking one guitar player over another, or one band's version of a song to another band's version I frankly have no idea of.
Neil Murray, now there's probably the finest bass player of the entire DP family.
Well, I didn't mean to imply my views were better or more relevant than yours of course.
The Rainbow version is good but for me too clean and technical. Whitesnake gave it a certain meandering majesty without relying on the solo section as much as when RB performed it. Coverdale delivered with huge emotion but has never had the same technical delivery as Dio (imo) but it's that kind of thing that draws me to the music... it feels slightly dangerous as if it could all go off the rails at any moment.
BTW, BM is a fan of Blackmores. Whether he was back in 1980 is another thing: the bands were at loggerheads for a while and it was probably banter to say otherwise.

Agree with all your points. RJD's one of my absolute favorite singers, but DC 'got more out of' Mistreated in his prime, really making it his own.
