Here is a bit of Pacific trivia:
In Hawaiian tradition there is a class of creature called Mo'o. A mo'o is basically a dragon. It is a large lizard like a 30 foot gecko and intelligent. Sometimes they can be friendly to people. Alternatively, they sometimes have a taste for human flesh. Some are shapeshifters and can assume human form. Similar creatures are mentioned as far west as New Zealand.
