For All The dragon Lovers
The Christmas Dragon (2001)
A dragon doesn’t get much for Christmas
The reindeer are too scared to stop by
And mailmen don’t even like dogs
So a dragon would just make them cry
A dragon doesn’t like to go sledding
The snow always melts away
And if he tried to wrap you a present
He’d just be shredding paper all day
But a dragon will sing you a carol
And you’ll hear it both near and afar
And dragons have always loved Christmas
For a dragon was the first Christmas star
A dragon won’t stay home on Christmas
So go out and sing us a score
And if you’re lucky, just maybe…just maybe
You’ll see a Christmas Dragon soar
The Christmas Dragon (2002)
The Christmas Dragon heard about
How we wrote his story down
So this year you might see him
Hiding in your town
Oh, he is not easy to pick out
No, he’s very hard to see
He could be a rock, or a drift of snow
Or even your Christmas tree
Yes, the Christmas Dragon is not one soul
But many colourful wyrms
He’s the Christmas Star, you know from before
But that’s just one of his forms
My Christmas lights are the many flames
From tiny dragonets
The star on top, that’s from a brown one
And he’s the longest yet
Dragons live up north too
Where it’s icy cold all year
The Northern Lights are dragon flame
Or so you just might hear
Twin dragons heat up Santa’s hearth
One sits on either side
And when he says, “Ho-ho, it’s cold!”
Their flames warm up his hide
Christmas Dragons warm our hearts
When the year is cold and damp
From every child to every Scrooge
And even a lonely tramp
So if you see a dragon this year
Maybe buried in the snow
Don’t be afraid, stand up and wave
And give your best Christmas, “Hello.”
The Christmas Dragon (2003, posthumously)
They come in all colours
They come in all shades
Some are red or vermillion
Crimson or cherry
Rosy or brick
Or even strawberry
Some are blue, or azure
Topaz, and sky
cobalt, or navy
Or midnight, oh my
Some are yellow or corn kernel
Sunshine or daisy
Butter, or lemon
Quite possibly canary
Some are orangey or pumpkin-ish
Autumn leaf, cheesy
Rum coloured or carrot
Maybe gingery
Some are green or spring grass
Verde or slimy
Olive, avocado
Probably army
Some are purple or grape
Violet or plum
Eggplant or lavender
Wisteria, well, some
Some are brown or beige
Taupe or russet
Mushroom, chocolate
A couple brunette
No, I’m not talking about dragons
They’ve more of a rainbow skin
These are the colours of their presents
Which you might get if you let one come in
The Christmas Dragon (2004)
Icicles hang from the front of the cave
The water, which once flowed, has been stopped
The snow covered ground bears nary a mark
And the pass in the mountains is closed up
The wary and fearful of both great and small
Now poke their heads out for a peak
Some foxes run by, and some birds give a chirp
But none stays long enough to speak
The treetops, which sometimes bore charred tips and branches
Are now growing green without toil
The flocks, which once fled and the slightest of noises
Now graze around, fat and quite spoiled
In the village below all the people go by
Whispering about what has gone
None of them want to mention its name
Though, none of them know it, for one
Inside the great caverns, which once were quite warm
Have frozen and dimmed in the cold
No lights light the halls and great chambers within
Nothing sparkles, no gems and no gold
But in one tiny corner, now cluttered and muddled
The colourful remains can be seen
Of paper and ribbons and boxes aplenty
Where once the great Dragon had been
No the Christmas Dragon has not faded away
He has only just left for a while
He is visiting me and has brought many gifts
Not to mention a fourteen foot smile
So to all those who wish for good friends and great cheer
We’ll welcome with great open arms
For no one can resist ninety-four honeyed hams
And a Dragon’s warm heart and bright charms
