working.....or not
Well, the subject of jobs is a hot topic in the Dragon's realm lately, and I can empathize because I'm having problems with that too.
I have signed up with no less than 3 different employment agencies over the last 2-1/2 months and so far none of them have given me a single assignment.
My resume is olay. I have office experience, good spelling and grammar, familiarity with a lot of common computer programs like MSWord, Excel and Quickbooks Accounting. I am willing to do light industrial (assembly) or warehouse (checking, packing). I went to apply in neat clean clothes, so they can't have a problem with my appearance!
So what's the big deal? I came to the conclusion that there are two things working against me: One) I admitted that I'm going back to school in September, so I only want temp assignments.
Two) I am a bit overweight (not too too much) and am in my 40's.
I think they don't get many temp assignments because employers want to use people who are looking for permanent positions assuming they will be more reliable. When they do get orders for temps. I'll bet they prefer to give the positions to 20 year olds.
My daughter gave me some tips I'd like to pass along. She said "Go to the MicroSoft website and take tutorials there to brush up on office programs, like Outlook and Excel."
Now I didn't realize that Outlook could be used with Excel to merge lists with e-mailings, etc. I never had to use it that way before, but apparently many offices now do that and that's why they want you to know Outlook (which I thought was just a type of email). So you might want to go to that site and download the Outlook tutorials and study up.
Another thing she told me was her boyfriend works a lot faster than his co-workers because he knows all the keyboard shortcuts. I knew there were shortcuts but never bothered to learn them because I didn't realize it might be useful in speeding up my keyboard work. Now I'm going to learn them and use them as often as possible, and I'm going to add that to my resume.

Re: working.....or not
Thank you Dy, I appreciate that.
>>I have found that being in your 40's is not so bad the tend to think of older people as more reliable.
I thought so too, but its been a rude shock to have all three agencies treat me like this. Of course, it might not be my age. I have decided to sign up for one more once I've done those tutorials, and I'm afraid I've decided to lie to them and say I'm looking for "permanent". If that makes no difference, then I'll know its my age, but I suspect it will make a difference.
