Service Based Education

All ideas -- lesson plans and Resources welcome to be posted here.

I heard today about a study that was recently done where there were two groups..

One group studied the traditional way.. with text book and and assignments from the text.. the way we've ALWAYS done it

Second group was hands on with service based assignments ..

When tested (state type testing -- ) both groups scored on an equal level
basis.. no one group did better or worse than another.

Then after a period of time.. the two groups were tested again.. The group taught with service based curriculum retained the information and tested at the same level as originally

The traditionally taught group lost ground and had not retained much of the information that they had originally been taught.

What does this appear to prove? That doing activities that not only help others, but also teach curriculum are more meaningful than activities that are simply from a text book.

What is service based education? Curriculum that engages students in somehow helping groups of community -- non-profit in nature..

Examples:

Language Arts or History classes making brochures about the historical attractions of the community.

Computer Apps classes creating web pages for non-profit groups in their community

Math classes planning and building greenhouses to grow plants for community beautification

Shop classes building ramps for handicapped residents to get in and out of their homes more easily.

Middle School children holding computer training classes for senior citizens to learn how to do word processing, powerpoint, email and web surfing.

These are just a few examples..

Feel free to add some of your experiences with projects that were successful or ideas that you think might be successful.

I am hoping to put together a resource page for teachers to use in coming up with Career Related Learning Experiences and Service Based Projects..

Any and all ideas welcome..
List websites you've used.

Let's get together in a virtual "circle of learning" and help our students learn lessons that will stick with them for their lifetimes.
