Don't Just Mourn the Climate Crisis, Escalate the Activism

Things are slowly comming together.

When I read the first few lines, I thought, boy that sounds just like how I feel some days.

Rogue German Ship Fertilizing Southern Ocean in Dangerous Climate Geo-Engineering Experiment - Precedent set that private researchers can experiment on Earth's shared biosphere without oversight. Protests highlight oceans are not carbon dumps, a biosphere cannot be engineered. January 20, 2009By Earth's Newsdesk, a project of Ecological Internethttp://www.ecoearth.info/newsdesk/CONTACT: Dr. Glen Barry, [email protected] (Seattle, WA) -- RV Polarstern, a German research ship from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, is to dump twenty tons of iron sulphate over 300 square kilometres of the Scotia Sea, off Chile's coast, near the Antarctic Peninsula. The chemical cargo -- normally used to treat lawns and sewage -- is likely to provoke a massive algal bloom big enough to be seen from outer space. German and Indian scientists are hoping the experiment will show that such manmade algae blooms can provide a quick fix to climate change by absorbing carbon into the sea. In fact, it is a desperate attempt to put off hard climate change policies by using technology to further create a human dominated "Frankensphere". Along with other geo-engineering proposals such as space mirrors and aerosol release, seeking to engineer the biosphere holds great risks of unintended consequences such as further climate destabilization and global ecological damage. The experiment breaches the global moratorium on ocean fertilization activities recently agreed under the U.N. Convention on Biological Diversity and defies agreements against dumping of wastes in the sea. Ocean fertilization treats oceans as carbon dumps, and will severely deplete already troubled marine ecosystems. "This is one of the first of many coming attempts to begin 'geo-engineering' the biosphere as a desperate measure to address climate change," notes Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet's President. "Geo-engineering won't work -- the atmosphere is simply too complex -- and trying will almost certainly make things worse. It diverts from sufficient emissions reductions, conservation and efficiency, and renewable energy solutions to stop climate change and restore global ecological systems." Along with other geo-engineering proposals such as space mirrors and aerosol release, seeking to engineer the biosphere holds great risks of unintended consequences such as further climate destabilization and global ecological damage. Global protest has already led to a review of the experiment. And in recent days 1,200 people from 63 countries have sent hundreds of thousands of protest emails from Ecological Internet's Earth Action Network to the German government[1]. They have demanded the experiment be cancelled, and Germany agrees to a permanent ban on large-scale geo-engineering experiments and implementation, until all other options are exhausted, and global geo-engineering protocols are in place.

After eight years of suffering under the Bush Administration's
"polluters-first" policies, the polar bear is now hurtling
headlong toward extinction.

It's up to the Obama Administration to slam on the brakes, put
Bush's dangerous policies in reverse, and give the green light
to full-fledged endangered species protection for the polar
bear.

But that won't happen unless millions of Americans speak out
now: http://www.nrdconline.org/campaign/Rescue_the_Polar_Bear

Why? Because President Obama's Interior Department will be under
tremendous pressure from the oil lobby to maintain the Bush
policy that puts oil development first and polar bears dead
last.

We must make our voices heard if we are to persuade Interior
Secretary Salazar to cancel Bush's "polar bears be damned"
approach.

The press release and alert regarding Canada's Tar Sands may be the most important climate alert we have ever done. Please send the alert at:

http://www.climateark.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=obama_tar_sands

It would be a global disaster if tar sands were exempted from future global warming regulation. Please forward the release and alert to friends and media in your area.

PRESS/SOCIAL MEDIA RELEASE
President Obama Urged to Say No to Canada's Tar Sands -
Canadian government wants special treatment for the world's dirtiest oil. In first international trip, President Obama must stand strong on clean energy and sufficient climate policies. February 16, 2009By Earth's Newsdesk,

(Seattle, WA) -- On February 19, President Barack Obama travels to Canada on his first international trip as President, where he will face pressure from the Government of Canada to support production of Alberta's filthy tar sands oil. An international network of environmental groups has launched the "Obama2Canada" campaign[1] urging President Obama to stand strong on his new energy economy agenda and reject entreaties from Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to shelter the dirtiest oil on earth from global warming regulation. "Tar sands oil is the dirtiest form of energy in the world. It has no place in President Obama's plans for a clean energy economy," said Sierra Club Dirty Fuels Campaign Coordinator Pat Gallagher. "Tar sands oil accelerates global warming. It destroys forests. It endangers public health. Instead of importing this expensive, dirty oil, we can invest in clean energy that will create millions of much-needed, sustainable jobs." Called oil sands by proponents, tar sands are the very dirtiest of fossil fuels. Producing oil from tar sands emits three times the global warming pollution as conventional oil, requires excessive amounts of energy and fresh water, and destroys huge swaths of ancient boreal forest. Given its massive carbon footprint, tarsands would almost certainly prove unviable under anyreasonable climate change regulations. Along with ending the use of coal and old growth forest destruction, stopping tar sands is essential global climate policy required to maintain an operable atmosphere.

It’s a cruel way to die… and it’s happening to some of the planet’s most ancient and endangered creatures. Snagged by razor sharp hooks on fishing lines that span anywhere from four to nine nautical miles, endangered sea turtles are drowning and dying right now off America’s shores.

My name is Bob Dreher, and I run the legal department here at Defenders of Wildlife. To help save these turtles from extinction, I’m overseeing a legal challenge right now to suspend the use of bottom longline fishing gear in vital sea turtle habitat in the Gulf of Mexico.

With your help today, I may be able to avoid a costly and lengthy legal battle that could rage on as more sea turtles die, and to secure immediate protection for imperiled sea turtles off our coasts.

Speak out for endangered sea turtles today. Sign our petition to the National Marine Fisheries Service urging the agency to suspend bottom longline fishing in the Gulf of Mexico so the beautiful sea voyagers have a shot at survival.

Please sign our petition

40,000 signatures are still needed

On his way out of office, Bush wrote a rule that allows agencies to skip review by federal wildlife scientists on projects like road building, oil and gas leasing and logging. This scientific review is critical in making sure that these projects don't harm endangered species and their habitats. Fortunately, President Obama signed a law that gives Interior Secretary Ken Salazar 60 days to withdraw the damaging Bush regulations. Salazar's deadline is May 10. It's your deadline, too. Take action now by telling Secretary Salazar to use science when choosing to protect our most vulnerable creatures. Ask him to restore this key safeguard of the ESA -- the common senserequirement for independent scientific review of federal projects that could threaten endangered wildlife. As it stands now, federal agencies involved with projects like highway, bridge, dam, and airport construction may ignore wildlife experts and determine for themselves what impact their work will have on endangered wildlife. We can't allow our federal agencies to see no evil. If Secretary Salazar fails to rescind the Bush regulations within this time period, the regulations stay in effect and wildlife on the brink of extinction will lose legal protections they need to survive. The clock is ticking -- we only have a few more days to tell Secretary Salazar to rescind the Bush regulations and keep precious wildlife under the protection of a strong Endangered Species Act. Please, act now.

Take Action: Tell Secretary Salazar to Protect EndangeredWildlife

Endangered Species Act

The Korean company Daewoo Logistics intends to lease half the agricultural land in Madagascar for 99 years, industrially producing maize and palm oil on 1.3 million hectares that are now biodiversity rich rainforests and gardens. There already exists a severe food crisis nationally and local peoples, who are soon to be dispossessed from their land, are protesting, causing a major government crisis. Tell Daewoo the people of Madagascar have spoken -- and to shove off and leave Madagascar's rainforests, peoples and land alone.
