Deadline for Talents
Because I'm still waiting for the minutes to get back to me from the meeting I can't post about everything, I want to make sure everything I do post is accurate.
Talents can only be declared until February 2nd 2008. As of February 3rd 2008 talents will no longer exist. All persons who were pursuing a talent before February 3rd may continue to do so until the declared talent is achieved.
If you plan to declare a talent before February 3rd 2008 please inform a member of the unit council or executive board giving them: your name, talent you wish to pursue, and the date of your declaration.

Re: Deadline for Talents
Talents are specific to Eryndor when it served as a chapter to which people belonged. As the chapter has changed and people now belong to units under the chapter, there really is no use for these anymore. Units can choose to do something along these lines and that's where you'll find the replacement for talents.

Re: Deadline for Talents
Not to mention, almost no one has bothered to pursue any of the talents offered in any significant way. Many people declared, and then did nothing or very little to accomplish it.

Re: Deadline for Talents
I think it'd be awesome for units to continue on int he spirit of the "Talent banner" although they might call it something quite different.
The Talents were a great idea, but they only REALLY appealed to about 10% (probably much less) of the entire Eryndor population... like Haldour said, many people *said* they wanted a Talent, but onl;y a dedicated handful really pushed through on them.
Regardless, anyone who wants to get that last talent in, still has a chance (Feb. 1 was the deadline, but I'm sure you could declare one a day or two later).
I haven't *heard* of anyone declaring a new Talent once they heard about this final deadline -- further evidence Eryndor collectively just wasn't all that stoked about Talents?

Re: Deadline for Talents
Hey, I got a talent, and I am proud of it(even though it was the easiest one to get, and don't mention it a whole lot).
However, it would be best for each unit to have their own types of talents, if they choice to have any. Some of the ones that we had where good ones for some people to go for, and I would be willing to try for another myself, but I do not have the time and the money to do them.
Also, to go along with the talent thing, for anyone who were to happen to get a talent, I feel, would be considered an expert of that area if others had any questions about something.
For example, I have the Navigator talent, so I would be considered the "expert" of directions, and helping those who happen to get lost to an event or campout.
Also, anyone who happen to get the "Blacksmith" talent would be great for having or running weapons making sessions, and can be used as an "expert" for different types of weapons and how to make them. This person would also be a good person for weapon's check, sense they already have the knowledge of how a weapon is made, and how it should be.
So, I feel that we should keep the talents availible, but bring the amount of talents down to a more "realistic" amount. Well, that is my 2 cents, so I hope some others feel the same.

Re: Deadline for Talents
But whether or not they choose to pursue the talents as set up has no real baring on whether anyone is an expert. I would consider myself to be more than qualified to do the blacksmithing talent. However, through a combination of laziness and lack of money and time to dedicate to the talent requirements, I did not declare it. Does that make me any less knowledgeable on the subject? No. Granted anyone that actually completes these would certainly need to be dedicated, and their input and aide would be a bonus to anyone working on a similar project, but there are other and, in my opinion, better ways to recognize people for their skill in a specific aspect of the game.

Re: Deadline for Talents
Actually I would like to chime in here too. I like the talents idea. Regarldess of Eryndor being made up of lots of units, were still Eryndor to the core. And new members are "Eryndor" before they choose a unit. So keeping some Eryndor-based traditions is not out of the question.
Also on behalf of those who declared and arent pursuing.....
I declared for artist or whatever its called. Had been doing character portraits and designs for the HC. HOWEVER, I am a self-employed illustrator who is EXTREMELY busy. If I am awake, I had better be working on something that pays, otherwise my family dont eat. So finding time to do these "freebies" is pretty darned hard!
That coupled with the AMOUNT illustrations I have to do for free for Eryndor makes it a talent I can only pursue very slowly.
Also, looking at some of the talents to aspire for.... See the one about making loaner armour for the realm. Not only is that time consuming but EXPENSIVE. To place a time restraint on getting all the requirements for that one is just not fair!
In the end these "Talents" are how others give. They give of their own time, talent and MONEY to the realm as a whole. Regardless of what unit they belong to. Why are we now discouraging this giving? If people are willing to work at it, to give and give, why are we *****ing that they are taking too long? Are you paying them to get it done within a set time frame?
Sorry, I dont mean to sound pissed. Im not pissed, but that makes me feel pretty jaded right there. I understand fostering the whole unit thing. But we're not at dissolving Eryndor a as a unique entity of its own, where cohesion of all members of the Realm is concerned, are we?
If Eryndor itself hasnt been disbanded, why dissolve these functions? I dont care what unit you belong to, youre still Eryndor darn it! And dissolving Talents and the like only serve to sever that feeling of cohesiveness.
Plus, if you make it so that you are only working toward that "merit badge" within your unit alone. Then that UNIT is the one to prosper from that persons giving. Not the realm! Imagine if the only armour-maker in the realm belonged to Legacy (for example) then Legacy would show up fully armoured and the rest of the realm would be screwed (thats an example, I know people make their own armour)
Thats it for my rant.
thanks,
~Katsu

Re: Deadline for Talents
Katsu, I think your very strong response to the loss of talents illustrates a big point made earlier... 5 - 10% of Eryndor was REALLY into Talents, you certainly are part of that group.
But I would contend its not really 'breaking Eryndor up even more' when only 5 or 6 people were gung-ho about talents, and a handful of others were lukewarm about it, in the first place.
Perhaps Talents, even if unused, did serve a symbolic function in Eryndor -- namely, we're all still 'really' under a single banner. I like the symbolic nature, but if that's the most essential function talents served, there is certainly a more appealing (to more members) and efficient (in terms of administration) manner to do it. Its just a manner of identifying what that may be and getting people on board to support it.
And Katsu, Mithris' new baby in his mind is an Eryndor Art Guild -- I think in many ways he wants to take certain aspects of talents to a whole nother level of craziness... I think you need to talk with him.
