Falx

Bonjour, hommes.

I'm Falx, a member of North Eryndor for... like, a year and a half. Having been on a bit of a Dag binge after seeing that Wreckreation Nation (and being unwilling to attend N. Eryndor's indoor winter practices), I figured I'd join the forums and see just what's going on. I guess I'll post the very very very rough draft of my story here, since I've already started making this post.

Feel free to offer suggestions or touch up details I messed up with my murky-at-best knowledge of the Eryndor mythos.

-------------------
Blade of the Forest
Outlook.
If you're not a Troll, it can be far from an idyllic place to live, but for many years, it was Outlook that Falx Atragene called home.

The Atragene family lived there, as many did, trying their best to survive each day. Some of the men were lumberers, as can be expected, but the rest- the less able-bodied, the elderly, and the very young- did what they could as craftsmen and women, selling their wares for the money to pay the Trolls their dues.
Things soon took a turn for the worse, however; sales began to dwindle, and what little money was brought in from the lumber trade was only barely enough to afford food for the family after they had paid their protectors. Starving and destitute, Falx's father Galen made the fateful choice to not pay the Trolls, in favor of keeping his family alive. The Trolls were not appreciative.
Now, Galen was a strong man, as would be expected of a woodsman, but he was no match for a Troll, and what began as simple pressuring to pay their dues quickly turned to violence as Galen refused to sacrifice the well-being of the Atragenes for this so-called "protection." Soon after, Galen went missing.

From there, more and more of the Atragene family was bullied and- in the best of cases- beaten by the Trolls. When only a terrified, resentful handful remained, they made the choice to leave Outlook and to never turn back.
The protection of the Trolls, though corrupt, was far from being without merit, however. As the remaining members of the family attempted to move towards Gohithica, they were waylaid by the very denizens of the Redskin Forest the Trolls had been protecting them from. Bandits, thieves, monsters- it was impossible to tell in the haze of blood and fear-spurred adrenaline.
Stricken by terror, Falx ran deeper into the woods, leaving his family behind, in a desperate attempt to find somebody, anybody who could help. The attackers seemed satisfied with taking what family he had left, and did not make an attempt to follow the pale, wiry youth as he fled.

Starving, tired, and spent, Falx finally collapsed at the base of a large tree in the depths of the Redskin.

When he came to the following morning, he found himself on a bed of straw in a small cabin. A kettle on the fire, smelling of stewed rabbit, quickly caught his attention.
"You're finally up," spoke a voice from the corner of the room. "You'd been asleep so long, I was beginning to wonder if you'd ever awake."
"Who are you? Where am I? My family, are they all right? I--"
"Quiet."

That was his first meeting with the ranger Vaeltaa. When Falx had calmed and recovered his strength, they began to discuss what had happened. If what Vaeltaa said was true, then the situation was bleak; there was no trace of Falx's remaining family in the vicinity, and he was currently recuperating in the ranger's own cabin deep within the Redskin Forest.
"But this is no time to lose hope," said Vaeltaa to the despairing young Falx.
"Why not? My family is gone. I can't survive out here on my own, and I haven't the skills to make a living in the city. There's nothing left for me."
"You couldn't be more wrong, boy. What you have left is the greatest thing any of us could hope for... a future."

From that day forth, Vaeltaa took in Falx as his own adopted son. He taught him the ways of the woods, how to live with nature and understand it. It was under his tutelage that Falx learned how to wield the sword, the dagger, and the bow, and the arts needed to survive in the forest on his own. The bond they shared grew close, but on his 18th birthday, and with a bittersweet goodbye, Vaeltaa set Falx to live out on his own.

With the clothes on his back, and the sword and hunting knife Vaeltaa had given him, Falx set out into the woods as a ranger in his own right. For nearly a year, he lived by himself, almost nomadically amongst the great trees, hunting for sustenance and taking supplies in the night from passing bandit tribes, his memories of Vaeltaa and the regret of abandoning his family forever etched upon his mind.

Some say that Falx Atragene has been watching the actions of the Crusade, and of the Thieves' Guild, with great curiosity from the depths of the forest; whether he intends to ally himself with one or the other remains to be seen.
-------------------

And that's that. Like I said, if you have any suggestions, feel free to make them. I tried my best in writing a good backstory, but I feel the end may have been a little rushed... and hopefully I didn't muck any of my facts up too badly.
In short: Hi! I'm Falx, and I like swords.

Re: Falx

Ummm... there are no beasts in the Redskin... just a whole lot of Outlaws and Thieves. There's also a small village of Druids.

Hi, it's Jarred haven't seen you in a while. Good story, but your facts are a bit... off.

Ah, well, that's why I asked for corrections. The Eryndor wiki said otherwise. (http://eryndor.wik.is/The_Continent/Cities/Outlook)

It's a small correction though, so I can edit it if need be.

The Trolls are Just north and west of Outlook, not east into the forest.

Edited. Minor changes; hope it's more satisfactory now. Any other factual (or, what the hell, stylistic) errors that need to be addressed before it's acceptable as a backstory?

Re: Falx

The thieves guild wouldn't kill your family. And we have the edges of the forest trapped greatly.

Perhaps you'd be better off saying that people started dying for no "apparent" reason, and you ran. Barely managing to get to safety.

The ranger would know of the guild's presence within the forest, and wouldn't live on his own, he'd be in the druidic enclave that resides at the heart of the forest. The guild live in an elaborate tree-fort in the canopy. We'd have known about your approach, and you'd have been taken into the heart because you can't see the way out again. You'd effectively be a captive.

Well actually, from the way I read the story the Theive's Guild would not actually even exist at the time he was near the Redskin. Considering he spent at least a year wandering by himself and some time living with the ranger guy, that is well over the year and a half that the Theive's Guild has existed in universe. So actually, your story was perfectly accurate in that regard.

Also, the **** there are not beasts in a forest, its a ******* forest pre-Industrial age. Beast to man ratio is like 7,894,579:1.

I enjoyed your story. It was interesting, fit in the universe, and was not overpowered. Keep writing more!

I don't like beasties... we kill those

also, I thought that he was trying to jump into the storyline at current... didn't think that through a whole lot.

Thanks, Muhdurin. Always nice to know my work's appreciated... I'll write more when I think of interesting things to add to the mythos, lol.

The way I tried to describe it in my last edit was that the attackers in the forest could've been thieves, or they could've been feral animals, or just a bunch of assholes who don't like people from Outlook. The general idea was that Falx, as a scared-out-of-his-mind teenager, just took off and ran without being able to see what was happening; the ranger he stayed with never said their bodies were found, so it's unknown whether his family is alive, or dead, or enslaved, or what.
I could edit again if that's not clear, heh.

nope it's good, now that I'm looking at it differently. Sometimes it just takes someone else to give their thoughts to make you see clearly.
