Something that Fred doesn't seem to understand (at least in the part I read, I stopped reading in the middle of it, as he was giving the "horse" its 10th or so lash) is that the reason foreign airlines are able to give such great service is that they are heavily subsidized by their governments. I flew often from 1971 until 2004, usually 8 or so trips a year, and the American airlines deteriorated rapidly after most subsidies were dropped in the name of "privatization." I agree that traveling by air, especially on American airlines, is hell on earth, but it's not all THEIR fault. Money talks, everything else walks.

Re: Fly the friendly skies
If I were still having to fly, yes I'd be, but since I haven't flown in 5 years, it doesn't matter all that much to me anymore, especially since I'm not likely to ever fly again. I prefer driving when I can. But, I think people like Fred should acknowledge reality when writing crap like that.

Re: Fly the friendly skies
Southwest doesn't charge for luggage and they are not living off of government money.
Being giving breaks by government can be, not being taxed on the fuel they use.

Southwest came late to the table. As such, they were able to pick off the lucrative routes and weren't obligated to service the routes that older airlines had taken on during the days of government subsidies and couldn't drop easily once those subsidies ended. Everything is ALWAYS about the money.

Re: Fly the friendly skies
I know that the airlines had a lot more to offer their customers before they tried to make money by loading the hood into every aircraft.
It used to be you could expect proper service, food and comfortable seats with enough room to stretch out.
Now you cannot even get what used to be coach while paying for and sitting in 1st class.
Want to make a bundle in the airline industry. Quit trying to act like the socialist model and think American, or National, or NW Orient, or something other than US Air. or what used to be a great airline, Delta.
However; all that beats the hard seats in a C-130.... (sigh)
