Angels and Demons: - Dan Brown

Official Freelance Writers United review of: -
Angels and Demons, written by Dan Brown.

Review by Kevin Martin

Oh my, this is only the seventh book review we’ve done, and we are now onto our second Dan Brown work! How could this be? Well, it is because I read a book and just HAD to do a review on it! Angels and Demons by my favourite author of the moment, Dan Brown, is that book.

I read the Da Vinci Code prior to Angels and Demons, even though the later occurred before! However there was no problem doing it this way. Each book is entirely independent from the other. The only link is the lead character, Robert Langdon. One thing I did notice is the similar start to both books, Robert being awoke by the phone/fax, the whole structure was almost identical. But, thereafter, Angels and Demons takes its own path. An intricate path that involves a murdered Pope, secret societies and a macabre tour of Rome - not to mention the inclusion of the age-old battle between science and religion.

As usual with Dan Brown, you get lots of interesting little facts weaved into his writing. The conversations are genius, and that is an understatement! You are totally drawn into the story, the characters, the whole Robert Langdon world. Dan Brown is a master of turning the seemingly subtle nuances at the start of a book into major plot developments later. I’m so in love with Dan Brown’s style of writing that all other writers seem to pale insignificance, it’s very unique, unlike anybody else. And the research into locations is phenomenal. He has a clever way of ensuring the factual information contained is researched almost to perfection. Some details are often open to debate, but that is not the fault of the author, rather it is because right throughout history the record of many of mans actions conflict depending on which account you read. Because Dan Brown has chosen one over the other is what leads to the debating.

The key to this book, and what gives it its crowning glory, is the featured locations. The churches of Santa Maria Della Vittoria, Santa Maria del Popolo and of course the Church of St Peter, not to mention glorious literate descriptions of such marvels as St. Peter's Basilica the Ecstasy of St. Teresa and my personal favourite, The Fountain of The Four Rivers. You are transported to Rome just like Robert Langdon and female lead, Vittoria Vetra. The love interest between these characters is touched on in The Da Vinci Code, but throughout the story you grasp a connection between the pair, deeper than the usual physical human romance Brown managed to give the impression of a spiritual understanding between the two.

The story flows at a frantic pace, you have lots to take in, and will really want to read this book twice, or even three times, to ensure you don’t miss anything. But the story is so well crafted that you just turn pages, and come to the end before you have even noticed. The end, however, is the only problem I have with this book. I will not give too much away, but the fantastical element that I don’t think was intentional is almost too hard to believe. You sometimes find yourself thinking “yes, but you wouldn’t really do that, in that situation”. However, for a book that contains such depth, such complexity and a great deal of intellect, it’s a very small price to pay for a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience.

The advice of Kevin Martin from Freelance Writers United.
"Dan Brown is a master and this book doesn't disappoint!"
