The Hobbit: - J.R.R.Tolkien
Official Freelance Writers United review of: -
The Hobbit, written by J.R.R.Tolkien.
Review by Kevin Martin
Before you even think of purchasing this book, take a deep composing breath ready for what awaits you as you look at the bottom left corner of the inside cover. Now release that breath sharply coupled with a gasp of “What!”.
If you are wondering what I am babbling about the book is £25! I haven’t hit on extra digit by mistake but yes I am talking about that usually 285-page book called The Hobbit!
Now you can pick up a copy of the “normal” book for £3.99, so why is this £25? Well I can answer that question with two words that when merged together form the name of the greatest ever Fantasy Artist, period, Alan Lee. Couple the story of the hobbit, with the artistry of Mr Lee and you have a book that thoroughly justifies its rather substantial price tag.
Now why should you by this book? Well, if you haven’t read the hobbit, or seen Alan Lee’s work then that is reason enough. If on the other hand you have done either of the above, then just hear this. The story is simply the best even written and the artwork simply the greatest ever created, so you must have this book as hard evidence to back up this claim that comes in the form of this book.
As you have probably gathered I liked this book, no that is an understatement, I positively adored this book. But for a moment I will just concentrate on the story as the art quite frankly can’t be put into words and that would make for a rather boring review!
Some see this book as a prologue for Lord of the Rings, but that does The Hobbit a great injustice. Others see it as, at times, rather childish, but that is just being naïve. The book is a work of the finest art and in its own field matches that of the Sistine Chapel.
After you have read this book, which you should without doubt do, just take a moment remembering all that has happened within it’s pages. Then sit and wonder in the thought of how such depth, complexity and creation has been fused into such a small numbers of pages!
Admittedly Tolkien’s writing style is the course for some debate. While some people cherish every word like the finest wine, others regurgitate the taste with utter republish! Personally I admit at times, not so much in The Hobbit mainly in Lord of the Rings, certain passages drag on, and are elongated beyond the point of need, but in retrospect this aspect of Tolkien’s writing is what made Middle Earth so real.
The Hobbit is the book that introduced to the fantasy world the likes of Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, Elrond Half-elven and a small grey being that some call Smeagol, but most know as Gollum. But more importantly it is the book that opened the door to Middle Earth, a door that has remained ajar for many decade and will for sure be forced wide open by the new influx into the world that the film releases have coursed.
The book really is a classic read, a statement more than emphasised by the fact that I am doing a review 67 years after it’s release! But even more highlighted by its constant sales and ever growing arming of fans. But don’t just take my word for it, go read it for yourself and let yourself be dragged into Middle Earth. The Hobbit isn’t a prologue for Lord of the Rings, but an introduction to Middle Earth, and a thoroughly enjoyable, enthralling and classic read.
The advice of Kevin Martin from Freelance Writers United.
"“If you have only £4 in your pocket, buy the normal paperback version, then go read it. Once read get a job mowing laws and earn yourself £25 and go by the Illustrated Edition.”"
