Favourite bedtime reading

I’m just wondering what kind of books people have for bedtime reading other than fiction (something I hardly ever read). I just today bought myself 3 books, this will probably give you an insight into the kind of things I read.

The Guv’nor

This is the classic book that started an entire genre, the incredible story of the world’s greatest hardman…

Lenny McLean was the deadliest bare-knuckle fighter Britain has ever seen. He had dear, powerful friends, but he also had terrible enemies. So much so that he had two bullet wounds in his back – each from a different attack. He was also stabbed repeatedly – always from behind. But Lenny was also a warm, huge-hearted grizzly bear of a man, whose main weakness was an overwhelming desire to put the welfare of his mates ahead of his own well-being.

In this extraordinary autobiography he tells how the Mafia flew him to New York to take on their greatest bare-knuckle boxer in a multi-million pound illicit challenge bout. The Mafia’s man lasted less than three minutes. When the IRA fronted up a London gang in a money-laundering scam, Lenny was brought in to intimidate the terrorists. The IRA, not surprisingly, backed off…

Lenny’s most serious trial came when he was accused of murder. Fighting to prove his innocence against a minimum sentence of twenty-five years, Lenny never gave up, and went on to be found not guilty.

This is a tale of one man’s triumph against almost insurmountable odds, in a battle that Len fought everyday for himself, and to put ‘steam on the table’ for his wife and kids…

Fred & Rose

25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester: Centre of the most extraordinary case of multiple murder in modern British history

This was the bland semi-detached home of Fred and Rose West, and the guardian of their incredible secret: the remains of nine young women – many of them dismembered, decapitated and showing evidence of sexual torture – were buried under its cellar, bathroom floor and garden. The remains of Fred’s eight-year-old stepdaughter were under the extension of a nearby house; his first wife and nanny were buried in windswept fields some miles away. There are undoubtedly many other victims whose fates may never be known.

Yet Fred and Rose West, who committed at least nine of these murders together, continued to preserve the façade of a normal married life. Friends and neighbours considered them a loving if somewhat eccentric couple, and their crimes went undetected for over twenty years.

Howard Sounes is the journalist who broke the first major story about the Wests and coined the case’s famous name (The House Of Horrors). Drawing on exclusive interviews and months of painstaking research, he now reveals the secrets behind the headlines; the spiral of abuse, going back generations on both sides; the sexual histories and proclivities of Fred and Rose, whose lust for violent and bizarre sex motivated many of their murders; and their astonishing lifestyle in Cromwell Street.

Powerful, authoritative, irresistibly compelling, ‘FRED & ROSE’ documents the lives and crimes of the most notorious murderers in Britain’s recent criminal history, and offers completely new insights into these strange and tragic events.

HAROLD SHIPMAN: PRESCRIPTION FOR MURDER

The true story of mass murderer Dr. Harold Frederick Shipman

He was a pillar of the community, serving on local committees, donating prizes to the rugby club, organising charity collections. His patients thought the world of him: he was attentive, kind, never too busy to chat. And he was Britain’s most prolific serial killer, with over 250 victims, all of whom were his own patients.

After Shipman was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, there was a public inquiry, chaired by Dame Janet Smith, which looked into his murderous years in Hyde (near Manchester) and also revealed that at one home for the elderly he killed a third of the residents. A bungled Police investigation was exposed, in which a Detective Inspector did not even take notes of the interviews he conducted.

As well as being a compelling account of these monstrous crimes and of the man who committed them, this is an in-depth and authoritative investigation which looks at how he killed and how he was able to get away with it for so long. And it incorporates details of how he was able to commit his final act of violence inside his prison cell – by taking his own life.

Re: Favourite bedtime reading

Months since i started, i'm still reading. Addicted to everything about it, parodies, illustrated editions, first editions with spelling mistakes, my recent book collection acquisitions is basically all The Da Vinci Code related!

The Da Vinci Code

With The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown masterfully concocts an intelligent and lucid thriller that marries the gusto of an international murder mystery with a collection of fascinating esoteria culled from 2,000 years of Western history.
A murder in the silent after-hour halls of the Louvre museum reveals a sinister plot to uncover a secret that has been protected by a clandestine society since the days of Christ. The victim is a high-ranking agent of this ancient society who, in the moments before his death, manages to leave gruesome clues at the scene that only his granddaughter, noted cryptographer Sophie Neveu, and Robert Langdon, a famed symbologist, can untangle. The duo become both suspects and detectives searching for not only Neveu's grandfather's murderer but also the stunning secret of the ages he was charged to protect. Mere steps ahead of the authorities and the deadly competition, the mystery leads Neveu and Langdon on a breathless flight through France, England, and history itself. Brown (Angels and Demons) has created a page-turning thriller that also provides an amazing interpretation of Western history. Brown's hero and heroine embark on a lofty and intriguing exploration of some of Western culture's greatest mysteries--from the nature of the Mona Lisa's smile to the secret of the Holy Grail. Though some will quibble with the veracity of Brown's conjectures, therein lies the fun. The Da Vinci Code is an enthralling read that provides rich food for thought.

Achingly funny. The first and only parody of the mega-bestseller The Da Vinci Code.

The Da Vinci Code - Illustrated Edition

One of the bestselling novels of all time, Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code has intrigued and thrilled millions of readers around the world. Now all the artwork, symbols, architecture, and historic locations—over 160 images—are beautifully compiled in this full-color collector's edition.

A mind-bending code hidden in the works of Leonardo da Vinci. A desperate race through the cathedrals and castles of Europe. An astonishing truth concealed for centuries… unveiled at last.

While in Paris on business, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call. The elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum, a baffling cipher found near the body. As Langdon and a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, sort through the bizarre riddles, they are stunned to discover a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci–clues visible for all to see and yet ingeniously disguised by the painter.

The stakes are raised when Langdon uncovers a startling link: the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion—an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others. Langdon suspects they are on the hunt for a breathtaking historical secret, one that has proven through the centuries to be as enlightening as it is dangerous. In a frantic race through Paris, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu find themselves matching wits with a faceless powerbroker who appears to anticipate their every move. Unless they can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle, the Priory's secret—and an explosive ancient truth—will be lost forever.

Instantly catapulted to the top of the bestseller lists around the world, The Da Vinci Code is simultaneously lightning-paced, intelligent, and intricately layered with remarkable research and detail. From secrets embedded in the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, to the symbols of ancient Egypt, to the architecture of landmarks such as the Louvre, Westminster Abbey, Rosslyn Chapel, and more, this fully illustrated collector's edition delivers the complete reading experience of Dan Brown's riveting novel—from the opening pages to the unpredictable and stunning conclusion.
