Ithon adventures
Any Mid Wales natives maybe interested to know an afternoon trip down to the Ithon proved to be a few hours well spent! Last Saturday my brother and I caught nearly 20 fish between us during a 5 hour stint on the river. Starting at 1500 hrs on the Ddole field stretch we moved down stream past Lovers Leap finishing up by the water works at the far end of the Leap stretch at 2000 hrs. It was only the third time that I have been out fishing this year and I was more than happy to land a Chub to just over the 3lb mark!

Re: Ithon adventures
Hey Mattie, I trust all is well with you! The Chub fell to 3 red maggots on a size 12 hook, They certainly were not being shy I tell you! Spotted a wily old chub well up to specimen weight too! He was wise to it all though, couldnt get near him! thats the way it goes though. Hey maybe next time! lol

Have you tried slugs? the big black ones? Try freelining one as they have plenty of weight for casting.

Ive never tried slugs as bait but I know a few people that have had some success using this bait and method so I will give it a try some time in the future.

What I have used and still do use is mashed bread for feed. Take a stale loaf and cover it in water leave to soak for a couple of hours.
Now comes the messy bit, using your hands give it a good squidging thru your fingers. If that doesnt appeal beg borrow or steal the spud maher from the kitchen. Then attack the bread with this. Allow excess water to drain its ready for use and can be frozen if required.
For bait use a fresh loaf and tear off pieces to use as bread flake. Throw a couple of golf ball size mash in then fish the flake down stream. cheese paste can be used as an alternative.

Re: Ithon adventures
Apolgies for taking so long to reply guys, work has been a little demanding last few days!
Thanks for the bait tips guys much appreciated. Ive neva had much luck with bread on the Ithon though, dont know why?
Yea will let you know when im back next time, ive got leave to use and nothing to do so yea im up for smashing in a sessions on the river banks. Be good to meet someone else that knows the area. I havent seen anyone else fish the Ithon for years although I have seen evidence of other anglers along various stages of the river the last time I was out. Unfortunately I was having to pickup rubbish that wasnt mine.
Take nothing but memories, leave nothing but footprints!

Scarlet. thanks for picking up the rubbish.. I have the same problem on a small river in Staffs. It flows through a small town alongside the market and then parallel with the M6. Every time the river floods hundreds of plastic bottles get washed up. I assume from kind motorits throwing them through the window on to the motorway.
