Opening day R Penk To start the season I went to fish the Penk. Strange how childhood practices carry on through life. When going fishing we looked out for rabbits. If we saw any it meant the fishing would be good. I saw two on the drive over.
The river was low and running clear, so stalking and fish spotting the order of the day. At first it was difficult spotting fish as the odd cloud covered the sun. First fish a chub of 2lb13oz
Several swims were tried with no result. Then I spotted a small shoal of Bream so I dropped in only for another chub to snaffle the bait. This fish was almost a twin of the first. 2lb 11oz
Returning to the car I spotted some more chub near a fallen tree. Out went the tackle over went the rod top. I struck the fish jumped I was certain I'd hooked a trout. After some tail walking and further leaps I landed my first pike from the river. Nicely lip hooked. Only a jack of 2lb 12oz but a nice fish who fought well.
Both the chub were missing scales due I believe to recent spawning.
