Barbel Fishing

Why not ask me a hard question Mattie.

I use several knots. When using nylon mono I use a tucked half blood for hooks and swivels. For joining two lengths of mono I use a four turn water knot. I also use the no knot of course for both nylon and braid. I do not use a no knot with the flouro carbon I use as a hook length. I tested the different knots and the no knot failed miserably.

For flouro carbon and braid I I use the palomar and grinner knot. Normally the palomar for the swivel and grinner for the hook It seems the palomar is the stronger of the two knots. Hope this helps and not confuses.

That's fine, no confusement atall.
I've changed from my old knot because I had a couple fail with this new line. So because I didn't feel confident with them I'm now looking for an alternative. I have got a book on knots, but I thought i'd probably do best to ask which one you did and see how I get on with them.
Palomar and grinnar it is then. I'll probably get wrapped up in it all tonight. Lets just hope that I don't get knotted!lol

I don't use anything BUT a Grinnar knot, never failed yet, even with a circa. 8lb Bass

Ive used all the above knots taking fish to over 27lb. I have confidence in all of them. I do like to use what I consider the strongest knot. So in the case of a palomar and grinner it makes sense to me to use the palomar on the swivel and the grinner at the hook.

Re: Barbel Fishing

My knotts are terrible, it's always been knotts that let me down. They are the very reason why I tend to be unconfident with my fishing. It's stupid really but even now that I've got a good book on knotts, I still practice tying different ones for a fortnight or more and then when I think I've got it, I go out fishing without the book and I've forgotten how the Heck I tied the bloody things.

I've always been all fingers and thumbs.

Last time that I went fishing with Dave on the Wye, first cast my bomb came off in mid air. I'd tied all of my rigs at home and made several so that I'd got enough to last the day, but for some strange reason the first one was no good. I quickly re-tied another one on and that was ok and lasted me the rest of the day. I did check all of them at home by pulling them as hard as I could, so why that fisrt one should be weeker than the rest I'll never know.
Unless perhaps there was a weakness in my line.
I'll have to go out and re-spool my reels I think or at the very least check them all again!

I do like to tie my rigs at home and test then before use. Its also the reason why I like to carry my rods ready made up so at least I start with known good rigs and knots. There is a gadget that is available that allows you to attach a hook so you can test knots. Made by I think John Roberts.

I use bulk spools of line. I'm a great fan of Diawa Sensor 1000m for I think £7.99. Have used it for years in a lot of different breaking strains.

I go sea fishing and beach casting (I know it's like comparing oil paiting and graffiti), but I make all my rigs and booms at home and then put them in a rig wallet with a link on the rig and a rig link on the end of the line. It makes the fishing more fun.

I know what you mean Murf, It's so much better when you don't have to stop fishing and tie more rigs. Especially when your fingers are numb from the cold.

Re: Barbel Fishing

I have just come home from a fantastic hour and a halfs fishing.
I set off at 18.55 and arrived at the river at 19.00hrs. I kept low behind the cover of the sedges and trees sat down on the ground so as not to cast a shadow on the water and quietly baited up with a large piece of breadflake which would be free lined without even the use of a split shot, I wanted my bait to look natural as though it had just fallen from a tree. My first cast didn't go quite where I wanted it to but still I presumed the chub would be close in so I left it there.

After ten minutes or so I saw the line move but didn't know whether it was the wind so I left it where it was. nothing happened for another five minutes so I sat and looked at what was happening on the river. I couldn't believe how alive the surface was as chub after chub took flies from the surface so upon this I decided that I'd try surface fishing for them as I had done in the past.

Just while I was putting a nice piece of bread on the hook, I thought i'd throw a few lumps in to get them started. Before I could get my hook bait into the water I saw a chublet having a go at one of the pieces that I'd thrown in.
"Right I'm ready" so I cast in again not where I wanted it to go. It was hard to cast because of the over hanging branches and the long sedges also the fact that I didn't want to give away my position.
As soon as my crust hit the water there were big erruptions coming from below me, I couldn't see the fish but they sounded huge.
The urge to stick my head over the sedges to see what was happening was too much to bare, but I refrained from doing so as I didn't want to spook what was there.
As soon as I couldn't see anymore bread I lifted the rod knowing that my crust had been swiped (artful bleeding fish I thought) and went about putting some more on. I threw some more pieces onto the surface and there was the biggest splash imaginable from below my feet "must of thrown it right on top of them and spooked them I thought" so a nother slice was broken up and thrown in and I waited for ten minutes before plonking my hookbait in.
All hell broke loose below me again and as I reached for the landing net my rod went over into a severe arch. I knew straight away that I was into a good fish and I held it out of the reeds for just enough time to net it.

Photo's will be put up in a minute as I'm in need of a cuppa after all that.lol

Oh yes I forgot to say that it was hard to find a place to return the fish and lets just say that I'm glad nobody was there with a camera because although I try hard not to go in with my prize I couldn't obstain from doing so. I slipped forward trying to look after the fish with one hand and hold a post with the other and thought to myself oh sod it safety of the fish before my own and ended up standing in smelly sludge at the rivers edge.

The chub weighed in at 5lb 7oz (a new personal best) I just wish that someone was there with me because there was no way to take a decent photo.

A beautiful fish and what a gorgeous bronze colour. Next time we fish together I'll show you my method of self photograph. Its quite easy after a bit of practice and with digi cams its easier still.
