Good horror book = Good horror film

Is that really true?...well Steven King books normally morph into a good film, and i suppose the "failures" of this rule rarely get noticed. (if anybody knows of any please tell).

But i suppose with a film it is easy just to put loads of blood, guts and gore and forget about what really makes a horror film scary, the suspense, the wonder and the outright fear…basically what most of the B movies are like! With a book you basically gotta have them, or it wouldn’t get published…but a film can “cheat” if you like.

Probably the best horror film for me was Scream, had a bit of everything…humour, wit, gore and the obligatory good-looking blonde! The worst had to be Halloween h20 OH MY GOD did that film royally suck! Anyway that is the end of my babbling, feel free to add your own thoughts on the issue of “good book=good film”.

imho, not all good books turn out to be good films. guys, i know many of you will disagree, but i liked 'dreamcatcher', the book , but i hated the film...i dunno, sorry dreamcatcher fans, don't want to make you mad at me, please emoticon , but in simply hate this film...maybe it's only me... emoticon

another good book turned out to be a great film imho, 'the shining', i totally adore the book and the film.

omg, i totally agree with you here! i love scream because of all these reasons( except for the good looking blonde, lol) , and still nowadays i ask someone about any horror movie: is it like scream?

halloween h20 only had a good thing: josh hartnett, lmao!! it sucks, it in fact surpasses the limits of sucking, lol!

Good horror book = Good horror film

I think it all depends on whether or not the author of the book is allowed more creative control over the movie. See I never cared for The Shinning as a movie, for it lacked somethings from the book. If Stephen King was alright with that, I don't know, but if you notice his later movies are a bit longer and have more from the book. I tend to prefer the longer movies for that reason. I read The Stand and loved it, and I also loved the movie which is around 6 hours long, but it stays very close to the book.

Yeah that is very true. If the author has a close working relationship with the director then i suppose the film will draw greater reflection on the book.

not really true this topic title. i would say that books and films are totally different and sometimes a good book will make a good film. others times bad book might make a good film. it really is a different market with different requirements on it.

What a great topic. i have watched b rate horror movies for years. my favourite is Brain Dead (done by Peter Jackson who done lord of the rings). certain authors have a selling factor that comes with their name. if you see Steven King on a book or video you don't normally need to have seen adverts for it you would give a chance. however lesser known authors have to create something special to get noticed in the first place by a studio. if you are going purely on the level of b rate movies the plot has to be unique and scary while at the same time not shirting to show any of the blood and guts that even on the more risky Hollywood movies is often censored down on some level. but the difference between selling to a b rate studio/producer to the elite of this world normally boils down to how well the book does i’ve not very often seen a poor selling book be signed to a studio and made into a Hollywood blockbuster. to answer your question directly yes, but good book will equal good video if delivered the right way and the essence of what makes the book scary isn’t taken away by censored.

A perfect way of putting it. It all boils down to how much of the book is watered down, and it what way the studio goes about doing it.
