Article: The Children of Hurin: New Tolkien Book
Well here’s a surprise, looks like Christopher Tolkien (son of the legendary J.R.R. Tolkien) is going to expand the ample Middle Earth mythology yet further. It just had to happen, something that can make, potentially, THAT much money wouldn’t be allowed to die! 2007 will see the release of The Children of Hurin, the latest chapter in the Middle Earth saga.
Ok I’m clearly somewhat sceptical of the book, its timing, and the fact that J.R.R. is not with us to oversee its development. My only hope is Christopher Tolkien does the memory of his father justice. Personally I can't wait to read the book. Taking into consideration that it’s taken Christopher Tolkien 30years to "finally" release the book that his father, J.R.R. Tolkien, abandoned in 1918, seems to lead me to the conclusion he’s taken the time and effort to make the book a fitting Tolkien legacy, even if the timing does give for maximum financial gain. The crest of the wave that was created by the films just seems to be losing its stature and momentum. It’s now up to Christopher Tolkien to ensure that it doesn’t dwindle away to nothing more than a distant memory.
I’m sure this book will surge into bestseller lists throughout the land and hopefully, further down the line, they can enlist the great Peter Jackson (Director of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy) and Alan Lee (famous artist of Tolkien’s work) to turn this into a visual spectacular too. Alan Lee has already worked closely with Christopher Tolkien during the books production. The standard hardback edition of the book (set to retail at £18.99 in the UK, $26 in the US) will contain 8 paintings and 25 drawings together with a dramatic illustrated front cover.
"The Children of Hurin takes place on Middle Earth before the events of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Details are sparse, but the publisher, HarperCollins, has said it is: "an epic story of adventure, tragedy, fellowship and heroism."
The younger Tolkien used unfinished pieces and outlines composed by his father to resurrect the story that was abandoned in 1918." Inside Entertainment
