Article: Whatever Happened To "April Showers"?
We’ve all heard the song April Showers, made famous in the Disney Classic, Bambi, but how true are those lyrics in today’s world of climate change and global warming? For those of you that were not suffering the plight of that wobbly-legged fawn like I was, here’s the song in reference.
Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
Beating a tune
As you fall all around
Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
What can compare
To your beautiful sound
Drip, drip, drop
When the sky is cloudy
Your pretty music
Can brighten the day
Drip, drip, drop
When the sun says howdy
You say goodbye right away
Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
Beating a tune
Everywhere that you fall
Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
I'm getting wet
And I don't care at all
Drip, drop, drip, drop
I'll never be afraid
Of a good little
Gay little
April serenade
Happy lyrics that we could all draw reference to every April when the rain came. But this year things were ever so slightly different. Rather than the “drip, drip, drop” of those April Showers, we were treated to the blinding glare of an April sun. If you were to crane your head towards the sky, you’d find the usual droplets of rain replaced by rays of glorious sunlight.
In fact April was a strange month in more ways than one. Not only was it the warmest since 1943, but we had the fourth driest April in the last 46 years, not to mention only 19% of the average rainfall that one would usually have to endure during this spring month. We can also add to this rather queer series of phenomenon’s the sighting of Dolphins, weeks earlier than usual, matter-of-fact it wasn’t only Dolphins that were gracing our coastline, a basking shark was spotted off the coast of Cornwall. And for all those Strawberry lovers, you’d be pleased to know that Strawberry crops were ripening 10days earlier than normal, nature had tricked the plant into thinking summer had come early.
So what is happening to the climate? Is it changing as drastically as this April would suggest? Well in truth no, what happened this April in Britain was we were subjected to a freak area of high pressure that persisted for the month’s entirety. That’s what gave us the unseasonable sun and seized our April Showers. However, climate change means that yes, over time such songs as April Showers will be rendered meaningless and out of date, this April’s summery weather offered us a glimpse of what Global Warming has in store for us.
