Mid Wales Music Scene - GIG4: Newspaper Article
The Montpellier Basement, Llandrindod Wells, was filled to its rafters last Friday (8th June) as Mid Wales Music Scene’s latest live show attracted music fans from across the area. As the non-profit promotional company has progressed during its 10month life to date, the quality of the gigs, coupled with ever growing support from local music fans, has seen the shows MWMS put on get better and better, and that culminated in one of the best yet on Friday.
Newtown’s LikeChild offered a punchy indie/rock vibe that was the perfect start to the show, and a hint of the quality that was to come. Doused in wonderful lighting and producing a joyous sound (thanks to a top PA/Lighting set-up) Clovis Phillips’ vocal talents really got to shine through. Accompanied by Jimi Love (Bass Guitar), Darren Barnett (Guitar) and Tom Flynn (Drums), one of Newtown’s most up-and-coming bands showed Llandrindod Wells what they are all about and will surely be welcomed back to the town with open arms.
Moro Sky were next to take to the microphone, and they had a rather busy weekend. Not only was their catching melodic vibe being showcase during Friday, but they were also making an appearance at Llanidloes Football Club on Saturday (June 9th), on a line-up that contained Llanidloes’s finest The Kryptics and one of London’s hottest indie acts, Hatcham Social. Friday’s set was what you have come to expect from four guys who are starting to make a real name for themselves on the local music scene. Feet tapping riffs, catchy vocals and smooth drums all intertwined to give Moro Sky a unique, and thoroughly rounded, sound. Their repertoire of tracks is expanding, and the skill in which they perform them is increasing week after week.
One of the things that Mid Wales Music Scene really likes to encourage during its shows is the performing bands mingling with the audience. This is doubly important when you get to touring bands, who know very few people locally, it always adds an extra dimension to proceedings if they make a little effort to befriend the audience before they take to the stage. More often than not the crowd will then respond when the bands in question start their set. For Le Chat Noir however this theory was blown out of the water.
Eileen Spruce (Drums) and Teddy Hesper (Vocals/Guitar) did make the effort to mingle, they introduced themselves to all, were polite and pleasant and two of the most genuinely nice people you are ever likely to meet. That said, they probably didn’t have to make that effort, because once on stage Le Chat Noir showed they could rock the most hardnosed crowd, and at the same time showed that it’s, in fact, an insult to compare them to The White Stripes. Many people make this uneducated comparison (and I was guilty of it too) purely because you see a female on drums and a stylish lead singer, well for the record Le Chat Noir should not be compared to The White Stripes, if possible the performance that Eileen and Teddy put on for music fans in Mid Wales showed that Le Chat Noir are a band in their own entity and a band going far.
The live rendition of Wedding Dress was a sign of things to come, the crowd converged and Teddy and Eileen resorted to an extreme cabaret that really grasped the essence of rock. As the audience, by this stage in awe, bayed for more, Teddy threw his body about like a demented contortionist during which time the pleasant and beautiful Eileen became possessed and hit the drums with such ferocity at times you really feared for her equipment’s health! They gave every little ounce of energy during their performance and that fact wasn’t lost on their new army of fans who responded with an ovation worthy of the performance they had just witnessed.
As all in attendance took time to recover from a set that will go down in Mid Wales folk law, it was left to local headliners Synthetica to once again whip the crowd into a frenzy, and without surprise they didn’t fail. Mixing classy covers with their own concocted tunes, it was a chore for those in attendance to try and categorise the band into any single genre, when in truth this can’t really be done. Synthetica have techno beats, a rock edge, a punk persona and to top it all have a legion of fans who have fallen in love with the unique sound, and atmosphere, that they create. At long last they have got a demo together and were giving away copies during the show, it won’t be long before the EP is available for all to buy and without question it’ll be a massive seller and one of the hottest EP’s to come out of Mid Wales for a long time.
Mid Wales Music Scene would once again like to thank everybody who helped on the night, the fans for coming and showing their support and the bands for putting on such a wonderful show. A word must also go to Graham Middleton for allowing the use of the Montpellier Hotel.
Tonight (Friday June 15th) Mid Wales Music Scene will be offering a free showcase of acoustic talent. Brecon, Builth, Rhayader and Llandrindod are all represented as the cream of Mid Wales talent converge on the Hampton Hotel. Show will start at 7.30pm and entry will be free.
