Wyeside Music: Newspaper Article
The Wyesdie Newspaper Article
The Wyeside in Builth Wells recently played host to a music experience worthy of note. The evening was Harry Harris' first delve into the "stressful and turbulent world of event organising", but my word for one so young he pulled things together masterfully. Opening the show himself, a steady stream of eager music-goers filled the venue in anticipation of one of Mid Wales' most up and coming performers, and Harry Harris didn't let them down. Amongst his repertoire of acoustically driven aghast songs, he threw in a cover of the Kooks' recent hit Naïve, not to mention a rather special Snow Patrol cover where he was joined on stage by Sarah Thomas and Jon Paulsen. Together they merged to form a soulful trio and it was a wonderful, almost poetic, start to the evening. Harry's stylish and skilful set finished, and the stage was taken by The Forbidden Theory, a classy post hardcore quintet. Still a relatively raw band, who are just hitting the scene, the performance these guys put on would have led you to believe they were seasoned pros. Highlight of their set was arguably the deliverance of their up-and-coming single, I Hope I Haven't Missed You, which contains powerful lyrics and an array of classy guitar riffs. Watch out for these guys in the future! A brief interlude ensued, which merely highlight the sense of anticipation for the next band, Rhayader's very own The Hostages. I'm sure the remnants of their set are still resonating down the Wye as we speak. It's been a long time since I've seen a band fill the stage like these guys; they oozed presence, and went straight into a quality array of their own written tracks. Lead singer Tom Jones may share the name with one of Wales' most famous sons, but his vocals bore little resemblance, far more fitting of the band he is part of, he was actually very good (Even if his football skills leave a lot to be desired. The Hostages' performance at the '06 Workhouse Festival had to be cancelled as Tom damaged a shoulder playing the beautiful game, sighting the World Cup as the main culprit – a massive loss for all who attended the extravaganza)! A broken guitar led to an impromptu version of The Undertones classic, Teenage Kicks, but the song of the night award has to go to these guys, but for another cover. Kings of Leon's Four Kicks is some track, but I doubt you will see a rendition quite like this! Simon Boss-Johnson left his drum kit in the capable hands of James Cox, Tom Jones tweaked his vocal tenor, and Fearnley Evison strummed the bass with added vigour, the result, an energetic and awe sapping performance that left everybody present in a universal state of admiration (if not slightly worried for the mental, and physical, state of the performers)! The innocent Boss-Johnson's right hand donned a tambourine, but what came next was in the realms of extremity. Anybody within touching distance was at risk, as too was the drum kit, speakers and Boss' very own head! Bouncing, boisterous, booming, in a word, breathtaking! If you ever get a chance to see The Hostages, make sure you request this track! The Hostages left the stage to a cacophony of appreciation. And they laid the red carpet for the final act, who can only be described as energy personified! The multi talented James Cox was now lead vocals as the much-eulogized Last Chance for Day took the reins, and by gosh, the speeding stallion they were now the jockeys of went full tilt towards metaphoric hell! The guitar of Shane Healey was a less than subtle hint to what these guys were about. Hardcore screamo! The crowd were buzzing as the band melted seamlessly from track to track, Killing Yu Gi Oh arguably their best. The Mosh pits that formed were one thing, but a 100+ person wall of death was another. Choreographed by James Cox himself, you would have worried for the health of the participants, but alas, it was just another adrenaline charged moment in what was a spectacular night. It built up slowly, at the right pace, credit to the organiser himself for the line-up. And as the music's pace increased so did the temperature in the room, thanks in no small part to the performers all of whom were quite simply sublime. I thanked my lucky stars for the refreshment area; simply watching the energy being exhumed left me dry mouthed and in need of a cold one! All of the performers future gigs and details can be found on their Myspace sites www.myspace.com then /harryharris /theforbiddentheory /killthehostages or /lastchanceforday respectively. Check them out, one final word of note from me, don't miss out on these guys, catch them while they're hot!
