Re: …
So......... this report is a few days late as i was back home in Brum for a few days........
Saturday 15th September......... v Motherwell....... this was gonna be the one..... the first home victory of the season for Aberdeen....... As i placed my damp backside on the seat, steak pie and coke in hand, i suddenly realised that the rest of the Aberdeen support didn't share my optimism, which is why they had decided to stay away in droves. This gets me mad with Aberdeen fans........ they tell me they are the best fans in Scotland yet stay away....... I am not really a fan, i just go because they are the local team and i want to watch live football...... I walked about 4 miles in driving rain to get to this game, my clothes were so wet they were practically sticking to my skin..... Yet the majority of fans have decided to stay away..........
So the game starts with another suspect formation...... I am guessing it was 0-10-0 as Aberdeen packed the midfied in the hope of getting a 0-0. Neither side were showing much going forward but Aberdeen did have a shot on target midway through the half...... Which bough out a "TV" save for the Motherwell goal keeper.......... And then - Disaster with there first 2 chances Motherwell are 2 up and the Dons fans are having a collective breakdown. The half ends with a crescendo of boo's around the ground and i decide to have the second (fatal mistake) pie of the day......... The second half starts just as badly as the first and no team can really get a grip....... Aberdeen press but they do just not have a player upfront who is a born goalscorer.......... Motherwell are happy to sit on a two goal lead but give away a free kick in a dangerous position midway through the half....... its left to a recent buy from England - Jamie Smith to do the honours as he curls and superb free kick into the top corner.......... and suddenly the Dons are world beaters...... until the final whistle goes and the crowd once again have a break down............
Next home league game........... Gretna..... surely they can win this one!!!!

Re: Scottish Football
Saturday 29th Spetember........... vs Gretna
The Fairytale of Scottish football rolled into town today, the amateur team that showed up the lower Scottish Leagues for what they really are...... for those that don't know, Gretna used to play in the Unibond North League in England finishing just below the playoff spot in 8th place in the 2001/2 season.....
Then the SFA decided they wanted another team in the 3rd Division, but the Highland League teams (Scotlands equivalent of our Nationwide Conference) decided that they had a level of football they were all comfortable with, indeed some say better....... that they turned down the chance to join.
So, in an audacious move Brookes Mileson, the Gretna owner applied for the spot and they got it.... what followed was quite simply amazing.....
In there first season they finished a respectable 6th with 45points and scored 50 goals
Season 2 saw a 3rd place finish with 68 points and 59 goals.........
and then came the Year of the Doctor......... As Gretna romped to the title with 98 points...... Scoring an amazing 120 goals and conceding only 29..... the following season they romped to the 2nd Divison title....... the next season with almost the last kick they won promotion to the Premier league.......
And, after all this.............. less than 11,000 fans showed up, with Gretna themselves bringing only 40/50......
The game started almost as enjoyably as the steak pie i had cinsumed before kick off......... Aberdeen obviously saw Gretna as easy pickings and adopted a 0-0-10 formation as they went all out to get the opening goal...... With Mackie on the bench the Aberdeen players were at first alarmed to find that passes were actually getting to them and Jamie Smith and De Visscher both snatched at early chances....
In the 16th minute however, Zander Diamond forced the ball home from close range...... Almost straight form the kick-off it was 2-0 as Smith beat the offside trap to finish with aplomb...... And after that.......... well now i know what death is like....... the football became insipid and without flair, Aberdeen pressed but couldn't finish......... and Gretna spurned 2 late opportunities....... Darren Mackie did make an appearance in the second half to provide light relief for the fans.......... and i am please to announce that my "I SAW A MACKIE PASS REACH A TEAM-MATE" T-Shirts will soon be on sale on Ebay
The game also grew niggly as Gretna tried to show that they can survive in the top flight and Aberdeen got frustrated by not being able to put them to the sword.......
So 2-0 final score and happy to say that Gretna weren't at all embarrassed.
Next game - St Mirren
