Will a detailed love scene deduct from the value of a novel?

Not really in my eyes, if it's done tactfully, not like erotic fiction, it can add to a story, sometimes it's even a necessity. I think, like most things, it’s all about deliverance of the scene. The one main question though is “is it needed?” if the story is told just as well, or even better, without it, then don’t add it. If on the other hand it makes things seem somewhat fabricated, then go right ahead. It’s basically a judgement call.

Personally I am disgusted by near-porn scenes in books as it just doesn't fit in. It's ok to use love scenes to some degree, the characters have needs too right? I think it's best to leave it where the reader knows what takes place, but doesn't get any details.

Yeah sometimes suggestions of what is happening is better than a full-blown account. But you also have to remember it's a skill to write sex scenes, and at the end of the day to portray an erotic scene well it does take literate skill. If it fits into the mould of the story without detracting from it my vote has to be they can add extra dimensions to a book.

To finish however, i will say there should be warnings on novel covers. Not that i'm offended, far from it, but i have stumbled across erotic scenes when i least expected it in a book i simply didn't expect it to be in!!
