Creating Cultures
Alas, the year is 2006 Anno Domini, the world is changing, and one positive to come from the passing of ages is we are fortunate enough to have millennia of history at our disposal. As a writer of Fantasy and Science Fiction you may already use this method which was given to me by a good friend who is successful in this genre. If you are struggling to create a culture, why not look to the past and see which cultures were successful and use that culture as the frame work for your culture. Aztecs, Romans, Normans, Mongols, Persians, Aborigines, Cherokee Indians? The list is diverse and endless. You can base your creation on any culture. Learn what their foundations were, alter and tweak to create and customize your own culture.
It is widely said that J.R.R.Tolkien based his most famous creation, that of the Hobbit, on old “Shire” farmers from around Britain. This method is not a cheat, but it is a way of saving time, you cut out what could become years of additional writing by simply looking to the history books.
