Fantasy writing and reading, the appeal

Hi there,
I'm currently undertaking a study that sets out to find out why the fantasy genre is wanted and needed in contemporary society. I wondered if it would be ok to ask if you guys could try to define the reasons for the draw to the genre, both writing and reading. Is it purely escapism? Is it the flexibility? Is it the fact that yyou can always be kept guessing? Is it something else? Any feedback would be extremely useful as this study is my dissertation for my degree, and i need the opinions of real fans of the genre. Thanks again, any advice for other message boards that i might be able to get response for similar questions also very handy and welcome! Thanks again

I think the reason that I love reading and writing fantasy so much is that anything can happen, so much you can make happen that you cannot do in any other genre.

And also do not take the misconception that fantasy means medieval time-setting, some of the better pieces I've read have been set in modern day (or future although that will probably fall under sci-fi)

I suppose in a way it allows you to create a hero in the way that is impossible to recreate in these days, wars take place between people but in fantasy we can create races that have fueded for centuries put it all aside to protect the world from a new nemesis that threatens life.

In a way, you are showing human nature in an uncomplicated (sometimes) society. A time when people sought to be the hero but more for honor rather than the money and fame as today would probably be.

Adding onto what Katasaki wrote, a lot of it is probably just being able to explore ideas, characters and situations that are either too unlikely or impossible in any other genre.

"I'm sorry?" asked the girl.
"Da ga but du d-"
"Don't listen to him, Alice," ordered her mother.
