Clichés or however you spell it
I hope you understand what i mean by a cliché, i hope i'm spelling it correct. One thing i hate about many fantasy books is that they use so many standard things, like races for example. Why don't we make a list of these things so we can try to rule out the most obvious "mistakes".
I'm gonna start the list with some, not all i can think of, just the most important ones in my opinion. Of course, my view can differ from yours, i guess it will in some cases.
1. Orcs. I hate the use of orcs as probably 90% of all fantasy contains them, and it's about time people started finding replacements. Variations like Trollocks go under this too, as my impression of them is that they are about the same as orcs.
2. Elves. These come in many different styles, so have writers can have some credit for that, though mostly it's the same. They are superior, beautiful, immortal, often into magic, well it's mostly the same stuff and it gets quite boring after a while.
3. Farmboys as the main characters. Well, this is not necassarily a problem, but i'm finding it a bit hard to understand sometimes how these farmers can become so good at fighting and such when they have no combat experience to begin with. Twists such as they have practiced sword fighting since early age are ok, as they give some explenation at least.
So here is some of my views, feel free to comment and please add some more as it helps us to avoid it when we write.

4. Bad guys that just want to destroy the world. Why? Oh, just because you know... I don't get it. Make your 'evil' characters have a purpose.
5. God like characters. Your main character may be a great fighter or whatever but that does mean he can fight 1 million soldiers and come out unscratched. I hate unrealistic battles.
That's all I can think of for now. I might add more later.
But on your post I have no problems with orks and elves, well a little bit orks can be annoying because they are just grunts that kill whatever...like before why?
Elves can be a good race to write about, immortality allows them to see many things etc. But when people write them as some great uber force it seems a little skewed.

9. Stories that involve a nobody saving the beautiful princess and falling madly in love. Why they couldn't just have got the army to save her is a mystery. Better yet cus they are always kidnapped get her a bodyguard!!!
