Hans Christian Andersen

The master of short stories and fairy tales, a massive 168 tales, all written with the greatest of enthusiasm and many still holding their own today,

Little Tiny (or Thumbelina)
The Little Mermaid
The Brave Tin Soldier
The Ugly Duckling
The Snow Queen
Under the Willow-tree

To name only a few, and maybe a less mainstream one written in 1859 that was bizarrely titled The Philosopher’s Stone . The man himself is honoured in Central Park, New York, USA by a giant bronze effigy, and on Saturday 2nd of July 2001 Central Park Story season was held, again honouring the work of Hans Christian Andersen. His books and anthologies are still sought after until this day, and modern writers draw inspiration from Mr Andersens never dying tales. Really a master whose legend will remain in the hearts and minds of us, and hopefully our children, for many years to come.

not a fan of childrens or fairy tales, never have been and i can't see myself becoming one. but i do use them sometimes for reference work. you can get good ideas from some of them. strange but true. did once have an old book by H.C.Andersen and it did get some nice ideas to me a talented writer even if not to my tastes.

I have to disagree with you Kev, you can very well become a fan of fairytales in all ages! Especially because his stories is much more than fairytales, they are also very symbolic and critical about the society he lived in, and you can make referenges to our time! I love them, and I know a lot of older people, and adults who love them too!

Sorry to say it, but I believe you are very wrong on that point! emoticon emoticon

No don’t be sorry you are entitled to your opinion. I would feel however that if you didn’t like fairytales at a young age, on most occasions you won’t suddenly grow to them when you mature, then again that’s only my view and i don’t speak for everybody, that’s just the way i look at it. emoticon

I love fairytales, and if you knew me you'd probably laugh, "one of the lads" sort of thing, my mates quite literately laugh in my face when i say i've got books by HCS and annotated collections of Brothers Grim. What i was trying to say, and as i’ve said i could be wrong because i don’t speak for all, if you don’t like fairy tales when young i can’t see many people changing and suddenly liking them when they grow older.

Uh, thanks!! Hehe, got goosed at another board, have to have it for another 10 days! emoticon The location followed it! emoticon

If they laugh, they're uncultured and just don't understand it, and I would... well, let us not go into it! emoticon

Well, I guess it's up to the person whether or not you can become it... You might stumble over one and read it and become completely fascinated by it, or you'll hate it and throw it away as a children's book...

Totally true i suppose. In a roundabout way kinda what happened to me, i was a fan of fairytales, but didn't really have anything by HC, until that book fell into my possession.
