Journalism and Reporting (It’s kinda fun!)
I swore, no more than 3 years ago, that I would NEVER be a journalist. I remember a debate as clear as day, when I said how little respect I have for them. Oh what a difference time makes! It all started pretty innocently really, I simply attended a music performance at the Wyeside Theatre in Builth. Four local bands, a packed house, and a real sense of passion from the performers and music-goers alike. Spur of the moment I turned to Jason and simply muttered “it’ll be good if I try to get something in the paper about this.” He nodded, told his sister. Again nothing more than innocent chatter. Jason’s sister was in fact going out with the promoter and one of the performers, Harry Harris. Word got to Harry that I wanted to put this in the paper and he approached me saying how happy he would be to read about this gig. So, that was that. I done my write-up, sent it to the paper and it was printed, everybody was happy.
But that is not the end of this story, merely the beginning. Somebody obviously liked what I wrote, and the next thing I know I was approached to do regular music reviews for the paper. Obviously I said yes, nothing better than seeing your name in print. Now every fortnight my articles appear in the local paper. Again this is fantastic for me, but the musicians too. Every gig I attend I get bands approaching asking if I can focus them next. I get messages on Myspace asking me to go to places normally far out of my travelling range, to review a band for their websites. It really has spiralled and now, well now I’ve found I’ve fallen in love with journalism and reporting!!!
