Writing Humour (Chapter 1)
General Humour Advice
O.k i’m by no means an expert on the subject, i get very few laughs anyway, but what i am about to say is probably pretty obvious, although you’d be amazed at how many people forget this blatant step of writing humour. It’s simple, to the point, and will make you say “what is this guy on? Does he think we are stupid!”. But, if you want to write humour, then you have to read the work of other funny authors, listen to radio shows that claim to be funny and watch comedies on TV (but not Little Britain as that will play havoc with your grammar!).
Don’t sit and analyze work, because you’ll simply end up mimicking stuff that is already about, but what you have to do is get yourself into the right frame of mind to write funny stuff. (Watching Arsenal lose to Man Utd in 1999 FA cup semi-final should work well!)
Basically what I am trying to say in around about way, is you have to relax, enjoy and soak up humorous material. If you sit watching BBC News 24, watch reruns of past Xmas additions of East Enders or put teary-eyed movies on your DVD player (stay clear of Bambi, it’s a tearjerker!), then obviously your writing will unconsciously imitate the mood you have been put in.
So the more humour you are subjected to, the funnier your creative side will become, make humour a part of your daily life so you can absorb. You’ve got to imagine yourself as a digestive biscuit being dumped into a cup of boiling hot tea and soak up as much as you can. Be sure to sample bits of comedy from different eras, from different comedians, different magazines and different shows, because everybody’s tastes are different, the wider variety of humour you yourself are subjected to, the more you will unleash upon your unsuspecting readers.
