Re: The Hobbit! is the movie coming?
couldn't find much but found this, pretty much what we already know.
The Hobbit Updated :
Thursday 8th January 2004: The Hobbit Update:
Sir Ian McKellen has been talking about the possibility of reprising his role as Gandalf for The Hobbit "There is currently a situation where two companies own the rights, but when that's sorted out Peter (Jackson) and I will sit and talk it over. We've mentioned it recently and Peter is looking forward to getting it into production".
Tuesday 9th December 2003: The Hobbit Update:
Peter Jackson has confirmed his intention to film JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit. The Kiwi director had earlier refused to say either way if he would take on Tolkien's earlier story, but he recently told reporters in Berlin: "I'd be interested in doing it because I think it would give continuity to the overall chapter." Jackson also hinted at returns for Ian McKellen, who plays the wizard Gandalf, and Andy Serkis, who voiced and defined the movements of Gollum. He also said Liv Tyler, who plays elven princess Arwen, could reprise her role in the story, which is set 50 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings.
Wednesday 3rd December 2003: The Hobbit Update:
Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson says he would be interested in making a movie version of The Hobbit. LOTR production company New Line Cinema are reportedly in talks to buy the film rights for JRR Tolkien's book. Jackson has reportedly said that he would be keen to get involved after he finishes remaking King Kong in 2006. He said: "New Line haven't actually talked to me about The Hobbit. I know there's difficulty about the rights. Certainly, if they want to talk to me about it, I'd be keen. It would be wonderful to complete the set of films."
Monday 1st December 2003: The Hobbit Update:
New Line Producer Mark Ordesky has been talking at the Return of the King premiere about a possible The Hobbit movie "There could be a movie about the hobbit. Enough said."
Monday 3rd March 2003: The Hobbit Update:
Sir Ian McKellen has revealed that he wants to reprise his role of Gandalf in The Hobbit . "I want to play Gandalf again, in The Hobbit. I've asked Peter Jackson if he'll produce the prequel as a huge, yearlong television series. All those different strands to the story seem perfect for TV, and we'd do every scene of it. It could be marvelous."
Tuesday 4th February 2003: The Hobbit Update:
Peter Jackson has been talking about the possibility of him helming The Hobbit "Part of me would love to have somebody else make The Hobbit, so I could watch it as an audience member. On the other hand, it would feel odd. Nobody has asked me to do it, but if they did, I would give it serious consideration."
Tuesday 7th January 2003: The Hobbit Update:
Peter Jackson has been talking the Chicago Sun Times about the possibility of him making a big screen version of Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'. It's time to break the Hobbit. It's not that director Peter Jackson is sick of short characters with furry feet--he just has no plans to continue dwelling on them after the last "Lord of the Rings" debuts in late 2003. "People ask if I'm going to do 'The Hobbit' as my next film, and the answer is no," Jackson insists. "I think when I'm done with this trilogy I'll need a break from this theme and move on. I'm not saying never, but certainly not immediately."

Re: The Hobbit! is the movie coming?
News about the Hobbit!:)
Dispute over ”The Hobbit” raises an outcry in Cyberspace
Thousands of dedicated fans have protested heavily against the views of Peter Jackson not being the director of the filming of Tolkien’s book “The Hobbit” as expected. And the massive pressure has worked, because Jackson has been allowed back in the fold.
(from Aarhus Stiftstidende, December 16th, translated by Elisabeth)
At first he was to, then he was not, and now it looks like Peter Jackson does get to direct J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”.
Much thank to a massive internet campaign created by dedicated fans and actors, the man who transformed the Tolkien trilogy “The Lord of the Rings” to the silver screen can now continue to be the Tolkien interpreter numero uno.
The whole wretched business began about two weeks ago, when Peter Jackson wrote a post at the fansite Theonering.net. Here he explained that the movie company New Line had fired him and his wife, scriptwriter Fran Walsh, from “The Hobbit”.
- This is not what I wanted or saw coming, but on the other hand it is not constructive to be bitter. We had not other choice but to drop the idea of “The Hobbit” and begin on some other projects instead, Peter Jackson wrote.
The news hit the loyal and very big fan milieu like a bomb, and in a matter of hours thousands of fans had posted their thoughts, supporting Peter Jackson and raging against New Line. Signatures were collected, and soon more than 50,000 people from all around the world had signed a letter of protest.
At Theonering.net the webmaster Chris Pirrotta encouraged all fans to boycot any Tolkien movie not directed by Peter Jackson.
- The fans are very disappointed to se a person, who has created something so wonderful, being treated in such a manner by the movie company, Chris Pirrota says to The New York Times.
New Line explains
Soon the trouble was caught by the American media, who wrote the story and tried to get a comment from New Line.
New Line sent out a press release, where they explained that the coorperation with Peter Jackson on “The Hobbit” was tough, because the director has sued New Line.
Peter Jackson believes the company owes him and his company Wingnut Films money for “The Lord of the Rings” movies. According to Jackson, New Line keeps “The Hobbit” as a hostage in the dispute.
New Lines explanations to the public did not help a lot, and on the internet the support for Peter Jackson grew. Ian McKellen, the actor who portrayed the wizard Gandalf in “The Lord of the Rings”, posted a letter at his own website, where he wrote:
“I am very sad, I would have enjoyed to travel back to Middle Earth with Peter Jackson as team captain. It is very hard to imagine another director matching him.”
Also Elijah Wood, who plays the hobbit Frodo, have made a public announcement:
- If it ends up with Peter not making “The Hobbit” because of New Line, it will be a great tragedy, he has said among other things.
Oil on troubled water
In this way the case is an example of how fast the internet can be used to create a massive, public pressure, and in the end of last week the producer Saul Zaentz, who owns the right to the movies of Tolkien’s books, came out in the press.
To The New York Times he said that “we would like to make “The Hobbit”, and of course with Peter Jackson.”
At the same time another movie company, MGM, stepped in on the lane to pour oil on troubled water. MGM owns the distribution rights to “The Hobbit”, and is not interested in the movies – when they are finally made – being boycotted by million of filmgoers.
So a MGM-spokesperson expressed clearly that “we support Peter Jackson, and believe that when the dust has settled everywhere it will be him, who makes the movies. We cannot imagine another ending.”
