Writing: Workshop (Exercise 4)
Writing: Exercise 4 – That Proudest Moment
This Exercise is the simplest yet, and should be easy as everybody should be able to relate to it.
All you have to do is write about that moment in your life that made you feel proudest. Write about the experience from your point of view, so it needs to be first person (i.e I was most proud when…etc, etc, etc)
This Exercise should ideally be over 200 words, and remain below 2000 (but that can be wavered), and can be undertaken at any time, by anybody who wants to partake, but really can only be done once, unless something happens that surpasses that “proudest” moment.

Re: Writing: Workshop (Exercise 4)
That Proudest Moment
After a move from one state to another, I was unable to find an opening to teach at any of the local schools, but chanced upon a teaching position at an alternative school that was in desperate need of teachers. Due to my inexperience with the sort of youths I would be dealing with, as well as my gentle nature, the administration was a bit worried. They felt that a trip to the projects to see where these students would be coming from and a history of family backgrounds was much needed. I was also told that my students were reading on a third grade level. With their social behaviors and attitudes a bit of a mess, they told me not to expect to accomplish much. I was told I would not be able to increase their reading and writing skills, and that it would not be a reflection on my teaching abilities, but more a reflection on these particular types of students in general. One thing you can't tell me is I can't. I have to try and succeed.
The reading course, which was also a computer assisted program, had only 19 objectives for the entire school year, unlike English which had 101 objectives that the students needed to pass. I had my youth as an asset, as well as my gentle and loving nature, so had very few problems with the students. I was creative and unorthodox in my methods, and the students liked that. If a student could not grasp an idea, then I found another way to present it to them to help them gain understanding. I was told I could not get them to read, especially aloud. I was told I would not be able to get them to write a paragraph, let alone anything longer.
My proudest moment came when our classroom had unexpected visitors, the principal and the superintendent. Not only did my students stand up individually and read aloud, but they were reading something they wrote. The crowning touch was when my students recited all 19 objectives in a poem I had written for them, which they performed in rap style. The smiles on their faces at their achievements, the astonished look on our visitors faces, is my proudest moment.
