Writing: Workshop (Exercise 7)

Writing: Exercise 7 - Good/Bad Resume
(also known as a "truthful" one!)

A fun and simple way to do two things. Firstly, and the real point, to improve your fictional writing. Secondly to look at yourself without the rose tinted spectacles, and pick up on your inadvertent faults.

You are going for your ideal job interview; it can be anything, from your resume for a MacDonald’s burger-flipping job, a managerial position on a highflying advertising company, or that vacant managers job at Hull FC. All you have to do is do two separate paragraphs, one giving your good assets, and how they will help you in this chosen job, and secondly your bad points that will hinder you. At the very start of this exercise simply state for your fellow readers, what the job you are applying for is.

This Exercise is short one, it should ideally be over 150 words, and remain below 1500 (but that can be wavered), and can be undertaken at any time, by anybody who wants to partake, and can be done as many times as you like, so get that pen out or set those fingers typing, and have fun.

Re: Writing: Workshop (Exercise 7)

Vacancy: -
Left Wing – Arsenal FC

Good Points: -

I am a trustworthy and honest person, thus will not be corrupted by agents and false advice from fellow “professionals”. I have worked in, and around the media industry for many years, so will be able to manipulate certain publicity situations so that we will always come out smelling of roses. My contacts spread across Mid-Wales, so your youth scouting system could expand upon advice obtained by me. I also have extensive managerial training gained via many hours/days/weeks/years of my life studying tactical programmes such as Championship Manager, so my services to the club could be utilized through many levels.

My father used to be a semi-professional ref, and has also tutored me to look at the game from a ref’s perspective. I’ve also played the game, which could be considered an advantage for this vacancy, on a semi-professional level, playing first team football and scoring over 100 goals in my 5 seasons thus far. My main motivation in life is to succeed, morally and on a material level, although financial success always pales in significance to success that can be shared through many people, winning trophies a noble way of achieving this.

I’m also English, and follow the Englishmen’s work mentality when it comes to football, give 100% always, and will strive to win every game that I partake in, be it Exeter City away at Saint James Park, or AC Milan at the Giuseppe Meazza San-Siro Stadium. I’m young, success motivated and am willing to give all I can to this job.

Bad points: -

I am a Man Utd fan, which could work against me in this job, so I will always put a result that favours this club above anything else. I dislike the foreign invasion of below par players, and strive for parity of homegrown talent within the English game, especially at teams like Bolton, Arsenal and Portsmouth. I feel nauseated by the sight of Arsene Wenger, am sickened by the arrogance of Thierry Henry and would vomit in the face of Patrick Vieira if I were to witness him a) feigning an Injury b) trying to get a fellow “professional” sent off.

My timekeeping is terrible, and I often arrive for work 5/10 minutes late which might create some problems given the strict time margins that this line of work often operates under. I’m very confrontational in the mornings, and unless I have a cup of coffee as soon as I awake then my “easily-irritated” split personality often comes to the forefront of my persona.

Other than that I feel I am the best man for the job.

Re: Writing: Workshop (Exercise 7)

To Mr. Higgenbotham,

I am applying for position of Office manager. I have a BS in Psychology and an MA in Business. My people skills are excellent and much needed in working with others. I am extremely organized and professional. I feel it is important to be organized for a business to run smoothly and on schedule. I am honest and dependable, and rarely feel a need to take time off. I am quick to learn anything new that is needed to make your business a success. I am punctual, neat in appearance, with good communication skills, all of which will be an asset to your office. I believe in arriving to work early and have no problems with late departures or taking work home.

Due to my efficiency and being a workhorse, I will require a coffeemaker to be at my disposal. I will also need cigarette and bathroom breaks in order to keep my momentum and sanity intact. My honesty demands that I inform you of situations or set ups that are not functioning correctly, offer you better options to put in place, and expect these changes to be implemented. I will reprimand you if you break the rules you expect of your own workers.

Sincerely,
Alice Stickelmeyer
