Drive Shaft Safety Loop
This is the first time I'll have a car that will need a safety loop. To make sure I install it correctly it must be within 6" of the end nearest the transmission or something else perhaps? On my Chevy II there isn't much to bolt to in that area. Do we weld it to the floor pans or through bolt it or what. This is new ground for me!

The loop needs to surround the shaft within 6" from the front U-joint.
I am not sure if there is a spec on mountin the loop to the body. Mine is bolted thru the floorpan, I know others are made to take advantage of existing hardware and there is a mopar one that bolts to the tranny crossmember and hangs back.

Most of the guys are using a drve shaft loop that mounts to the transmission crossmember so they do not have to weld or drill into the car. Year One has one, but the problem with that one is that it sandwiches in between the crossmember and the bottom of the transmission. That puts some wierd angles into the driveshaft/u-joints. The 'Casey-made' driveshaft loop mounts under the crossmember with a spacer block and longer bolts for the tranny mount.

I looked in Jeg's and Summit catalogs and there is a variety of types and none were SPI spec. It would seem that I could fabricate one as long as it was encircling the drive shaft within 6" of the U joint. Bolting it to the cross member area should work out as well then. Any spec's on what is acceptable for material, size etc? Thanks everyone.

most tracks go by nhra rules, find someone that has a new rule book. but most are 6 inches from centerline of front u-joint. you can buy one of the bolt together ones and tweek it. hold it up under the car , possible bolting it in and heat it with a torch to tweak the angle. had to do that with my 72 nova years ago. nothing worse than the sound of the driveshaft spinning against the loop.
