Not so easy

In the never ending quest to ad content here, I figured we`d bring everybody here along with us on our quest for the 10`s. If you have been there before or if your close and your trying to go for the 10`s, i don`t have to tell you how truly impossible this goal seems.

I`ll give everybody here a quick summary of where were at. ( the car is Iggy`s new 70 Road Runner) So we build a Hemi capable of 10`s, buy a very nice 70 383 Road Runner and slap it in, we pull the automatic off the shelf that came out of the Challenger, upgrade the fuel lines and install two fuel pumps with 2 pick-ups in the tank, wired up the tac and MSD, installed a 4.10 gear and we headed to the track.

Re: Not so easy

emoticon So we literally started the car, warmed it up for 15 minutes and loaded it in the trailer. At this point we assembled the long block, painted the engine, installed a Hemi x-member, installed the 4.10 gear, painted a set of 90/10`s and QA1`s and installed them, wired up the MSD and fuel system and tac, plummed the complete fuel system, installed engine and trans, tow to the exhaust shop to have a complete system installed, towed to wheel alignment place, etc,etc and this was all done in 3 days. (ask Iggy`s)

We get to Orlando dragway and it`s 100+ degree`s outside. (record breaking temps) we really aren`t ready, the car seems to be overheating, we have NO idea where the Air/Fuel is at and because we have not driven the car at all i`m a tad worried about taking it down the track at this point.

We teched in and weigh her in (4000lbs almost even), the 1st pass was 12.10 or something.emoticon We changed the plugs and we were rewarded with an 11.50. We decided to call it a day at this point because we had about 10 issues to attend too..

Re: Not so easy

Dad and I head home while Iggy updates the RR with the lighter disc brakes, pulls about 60lbs out of her, and hands it over to me at the Mopar Nats. The game plan is to get her all tuned in and running 10`s, from there Iggy will take the wheel over....

First thing we do is head to the rear wheel dyno and after 20 passes or so we ended up with only 525HP, about 75HP down from where we should be and we CAN NOT find it. emoticon At this point why head to the track, were down 75HP. We do a compression test and all the goodies and find nothing. emoticon We pull the engine out, tear it down and find nothing wrong. emoticon

Now were crossing our T`s and dotting the I`s so the first place we go is the intake manifold. We had ran out of time and didn`t have it Extrude Honed so we sent that out. To increase our piston to head clearance we ended up installing a .066 Cometic head gasket and ended up with about .075 piston to head. On a Hemi the quench is key to making power so this time were going with a .040 head gasket and will end up with a dangerously close .049 piston to head. (7500 and alum rods) A fresh set of rings and a fresh hone job, and were gonna be installing a new cam to start with.

I`ve been guilty of just "being happy" with my combo and every Hemi I`ve built lately has the same cam. Terry`s MPH has now sent me back to the table in the search for power. Hopefully by late next week we`ll be back on the dyno and I`ll update the post.

Re: Not so easy

It would seem at this point 10`s would be a no brainer if you`ve already been there. Not the case............ Granted we have only been to the track once and we were NOT ready, let`s see how the 2nd time down the track pans out??

I`m doing everything in my power to get this car in the 10`s by Virginia and time is running out fast.

Does ANYBODY know of a place that can install a 6pt cromemoly roll bar in the Mich area with-in the next two weeks? I`ve ran into about 4 dead ends so far. emoticon

Re: Not so easy

Here`s a quicky. I put her back togeather and went to Milan Dragway, turned a 11.02@127 with a high end miss. Took her home and addressed the miss, loaded it up and headed to VMP where it burned up 2 pushrods. emoticon After years of doing this i had never burned up pushrods, but this stuff does happen. emoticon

Like the topic says, NOT SO EASY. emoticon

Re: Not so easy

i agree, its not easy to get a car that size into the 10's on skinny tires.

did you not get a chance to go back to the dyno and test the manifolds.....or is that info "classified"? emoticon

any new or different parts being installed for the upcoming season?

Re: Not so easy

We didn't do a back to back test on this manifold and with the lack of funds, there's no big improvements planned for 09.
